Translocator protein PET imaging in temporal lobe epilepsy: A reliable test-retest study using asymmetry index.

Objective: Translocator protein (TSPO) targeting positron emission tomography (PET) imaging radioligands have potential utility in epilepsy to assess the efficacy of novel therapeutics for targeting neuroinflammation. However, previous studies in healthy volunteers have indicated limited test-retest reliability of TSPO ligands. Here, we examine test-retest measures using TSPO PET imaging in subjects with epilepsy and healthy controls, to explore whether this biomarker can be used as an endpoint in clinical trials for epilepsy.

Acute Respiratory Infection Hubs: A Service Model with Potential to Optimise Infection Management.

Patients with acute respiratory infections (ARI)-including those with upper and lower respiratory infections from both bacterial and viral pathogens-are one of the most common reasons for acute deterioration, with large numbers of potentially avoidable hospital admissions. The acute respiratory infection hubs model was developed to improve healthcare access and quality of care for these patients. This article outlines the implementation of this model and its potential impacts in a number of areas.

Retrospective review of the epidemiology, microbiology, management and outcomes of intra-cranial abscesses at a neurosurgical tertiary referral centre, 2018-2020.

Background: Intracranial abscesses are rare but serious, and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Due to both the rarity and severity of these infections, well-controlled trials have not been reported in the literature, and optimal management is a matter for expert opinion. Advances in surgical management have improved outcomes and increased rates of microbiological diagnosis.

Case Report: Visceral Leishmaniasis Falsely Diagnosed as Q Fever.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a systemic infection caused by the protozoal parasite , spread via the bloodstream to the reticuloendothelial system, through the bite of the sand fly. It is endemic in parts of Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe, including the Mediterranean. Here, we describe a case of VL that was initially diagnosed as Q fever based on positive serology and showed a partial response to doxycycline treatment.
