Article Synopsis
  • The Deepwater Horizon oil spill is recognized as a major environmental disaster in the U.S., leading to extensive use of the chemical dispersant Corexit™ in response efforts.
  • A study assessed the impacts of Louisiana sweet crude oil and Corexit on the immune responses of bottlenose dolphins, focusing on lymphocyte proliferation (LP) and natural killer (NK) cell activity.
  • Findings showed that exposure to crude oil increased white blood cell proliferation at higher concentrations, while exposure to Corexit decreased it; however, it enhanced NK cell activity, suggesting potential vulnerability of marine mammals to diseases after exposure.

Pollution is a well-known threat to sea turtles but its impact is poorly understood. In vitro toxicity testing presents a promising avenue to assess and monitor the effects of environmental pollutants in these animals within the legal constraints of their endangered status. Reptilian cell cultures are rare and, in sea turtles, largely derived from animals affected by tumors.
