Purpose: The purpose of this article is share the lessons learned from recruiting and retaining adults with type 2 diabetes and solid tumor cancer into a longitudinal study exploring the relationship among chemotherapy, glycemic control, and symptoms.

Design/methods: Twelve-week longitudinal study, recruited thirty-four adults 21years or older with pre-existing type 2 diabetes and a solid tumor cancer, from three community based cancer centers who were eligible to receive outpatient chemotherapy.

Methods: Fisher's Exact Test (categorical variables) and Logistic Regression (continuous variables) were used to evaluate factors associated with participant withdrawal.

Objective: Individuals with diabetes who develop cancer have a worse 5-year overall survival rate and are more likely to develop an infection and/or be hospitalized when compared to those without diabetes. Patients with diabetes and cancer receiving chemotherapy have an increased risk for developing glycemic issues. The relationship between chemotherapy and glycemic control is not completely understood.

Idiosyncratic drug-induced liver injury (IDILI) typically occurs in a small fraction of patients and has resulted in removal of otherwise efficacious drugs from the market. Current preclinical testing methods are ineffective in predicting which drug candidates have IDILI liability. Recent results suggest that immune mediators such as tumor necrosis factor- (TNF) and interferon- (IFN) interact with drugs that cause IDILI to kill hepatocytes.

Despite the importance of neurological disorders associated with herpesviruses, the mechanism by which these viruses influence the central nervous system (CNS) has not been definitively established. Owing to the limitations of studying neuropathogenicity of human herpesviruses in their natural host, many aspects of their pathogenicity and immune response are studied in animal models. Here, we present an important model system that enables studying neuropathogenicity of herpesviruses in the natural host.

The influence of interindividual variability is not typically assessed in traditional toxicological studies. Given that chemical exposures occur in heterogeneous populations, this knowledge gap has the potential to cause undue harm within the realms of public health and industrial and municipal finances. A recent report from the National Research Council (NRC) suggests that when accounting for interindividual variation in responses, traditionally assumed nonlinear dose-response relationships (DRRs) for noncancer-causing endpoints would better be explained with a linear relationship within the low-dose region.

Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disease with a lifetime risk of developing as 1 in 700. Despite many recent discoveries about the genetics of ALS, the etiology of sporadic ALS remains largely unknown with gene-environment interaction suspected as a driver. Water quality and the toxin beta methyl-amino-alanine produced by cyanobacteria are suspected environmental triggers.
