Purpose: To evaluate macular morphology and function in diabetic macular edema (DME) over the course of intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) treatment with Ranibizumab.

Methods: A consecutive series of 39 study eyes with centre-involving DME were included in this study. In all subjects, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) according ETDRS protocol, fluorescein angiography (FA), microperimetric macular sensitivity (MP) and Spectral Domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) cross-sectional scans were obtained before treatment and after 3 monthly applied intravitreal Ranibizumab injections.

This study indicates that in addition to the significant improvement in visual acuity and reduction of central retinal thickness in patients with center-involving diabetic macular edema, intravitreal anti-VEGF treatment with Ranibizumab may also lead to a significant stabilization or even improvement of diabetic retinopathy.

Aim: To investigate treatment-related pain and the accuracy of navigated laser photocoagulation in the treatment of clinically significant macular edema.

Methods: Focal laser treatment of diabetic macular edema in 54 consecutive patients was digitally planned on fundus images and performed using the navigated laser photocoagulation system Navilas(®) (OD-OS GmbH, Teltow, Germany). Treatment-related pain was quantified on a visual analog scale directly after treatment and compared with a matched control group who received conventional laser treatment (n = 46).
