Osteoarthritis (OA) is characterized by degeneration of articular cartilage within the joint, inflammation and pain. The purpose of this study was to develop a primary, serum free cell culture system of human osteoarthritic articular chondrocytes (HOACs) with which to study manifestations of the disease process. Joint tissues were obtained from OA patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Article Synopsis
  • Neurotrophins, particularly brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), are crucial for the regeneration of damaged axons after peripheral nerve injuries, with distinct roles played by neurons and Schwann cells still under investigation.
  • Researchers conducted experiments on thy-1-YFP-H mice with cut peripheral nerves to determine the necessity of BDNF in both neurons and Schwann cells, finding that regeneration into nerves without Schwann cell BDNF was significantly lower compared to normal nerves.
  • Treadmill training enhanced nerve regeneration regardless of BDNF presence in the grafts, but it was ineffective in aiding axons from neurons that also lacked BDNF, highlighting that both Schwann cell- and neuron-derived BDNF are essential for effective
