Light treatment for seasonal Winter depression in African-American vs Caucasian outpatients.

Aim: To compare adherence, response, and remission with light treatment in African-American and Caucasian patients with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Methods: Seventy-eight study participants, age range 18-64 (51 African-Americans and 27 Caucasians) recruited from the Greater Baltimore Metropolitan area, with diagnoses of recurrent mood disorder with seasonal pattern, and confirmed by a Structured Clinical Interview for the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV, were enrolled in an open label study of daily bright light treatment. The trial lasted 6 wk with flexible dosing of light starting with 10000 lux bright light for 60 min daily in the morning.

Left atrial rupture secondary to myxomatous mitral valve disease in 11 dogs.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the long-term outcome in dogs with left atrial rupture secondary to myxomatous mitral valve disease. Eleven client-owned dogs met the inclusion criteria for the study. Median age was 11.

Isolation of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis in a dog with endocarditis.

A 4-year-old male castrated Borzoi dog presented on referral for evaluation of pleural effusion, ventricular arrhythmias, and suspected dilated cardiomyopathy. Echocardiogram identified several masses along the chordae tendineae, as well as a long the annulus of the mitral valve. A blood culture was positive for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus lugdunensis.

Suspected Bartonella-associated myocarditis and supraventricular tachycardia in a cat.

A 4-year old female spayed domestic short hair cat presented for evaluation of a tachyarrhythmia identified on routine physical examination. Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) was identified on electrocardiogram (ECG). Echocardiogram failed to identify any structural heart disease.

Changes in Severity of Allergy and Anxiety Symptoms Are Positively Correlated in Patients with Recurrent Mood Disorders Who Are Exposed to Seasonal Peaks of Aeroallergens.

Considering clinical and animal evidence suggesting a relationship between allergy and anxiety, we hypothesized that, from low to high aeroallergen exposure, changes in anxiety symptom scores in patients with primary mood disorders will correlate with changes in allergy symptom scores. We also anticipated that sensitization to tree pollen, as determined by allergen specific IgE antibodies, will predict a greater worsening of anxiety during exposure to tree pollen. 51 patients with unipolar or bipolar disorder (age: 19-63 years, 65% female) were recruited.

A two year old, female spayed border collie presented three weeks after permanent pacemaker implantation for weakness, lethargy and collapse. Electrocardiogram documented complete (3(rd) degree) atrioventricular (AV) block, the absence of pacing and a ventricular escape rhythm. Thoracic radiographs revealed retraction and dislodgement of the passive fixation lead from the right ventricular apex.
