An annual External Quality Assurance (EQA) program has been provided to processing laboratories over the last ten years, allowing them to assess the performance of their processing methods, such as nucleic acid extractions or peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) isolation and cryopreservation. The objective of this study was to perform a global analysis on almost 1000 EQA scheme/participant data in order to assess (i) the impact of critical preanalytical factors on quantitative or qualitative attributes of different types of specimens and (ii) laboratory performance pattern over time. Statistical analysis was performed within each EQA scheme based on categorized preanalytical data provided by the participants and on centralized measurements of relevant quality attributes of the produced specimens (z-scores): DNA, cell-free (cf)DNA or RNA extraction from blood, DNA or RNA extraction from formalin fixed tissue, DNA or RNA extraction from frozen tissue, DNA extraction from saliva or stool, viable PBMC isolation and cryopreservation.

A glass belonging to the system SiO2-P2O5-CaO-MgO-Na2O-K2O was modified by introducing two different amounts of manganese oxide (MnO). Mn-doped glasses were prepared by melt and quenching technique and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation and energy dispersion spectrometry (EDS) analysis. In vitro bioactivity test in simulated body fluid (SBF) showed a slight decrease in the reactivity kinetics of Mn-doped glasses compared to the glass used as control; however the glasses maintained a good degree of bioactivity.

Purpose: Abdominal wall hernia is one of the commonest surgical disorders worldwide, and there is no single gold-standard operative technique to repair it. Background: Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a chronic complication of bisphosphonate therapy, mainly when intravenous, in cancer patients with bone metastases and myeloma. Its pathophysiology is not yet fully elucidated; in particular, the molecular/cellular events triggering ONJ remain unclear. This complication could result from the effect of bisphosphonates released from bone into the soft-tissues, or from osteolysis induced by soft-tissues directly exposed to bisphosphonates.

Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymes are involved in maintaining cellular homeostasis by metabolizing both endogenous and exogenous reactive aldehydes. A 3D-glass-ceramic scaffold for bone tissue engineering with an interconnected macroporous network of pores was doped with silver ions in order to confer antibacterial properties. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is reported to have anti-cancer activity, based on animal and in vitro studies. Since it has been suggested that CLA anti-carcinogenic effect stems from its anti-inflammatory properties, this study investigated whether CLA can prevent cell proliferation induced by TPA in human keratinocytes NCTC 2544 contemporary to inhibition of inflammation. Results obtained showed that CLA prevents increased cell proliferation and production of pro-inflammatory molecules determined by TPA, being this effect due to modulation of PPARs and NFkB activity.

As referral centre for the Marche region, within the national acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance program, coordinated by the National Institute of Health, the Department of Hygiene of the University of Ancona, launched its surveillance activities in February 1997, by involving pediatric, neurology and infectious disease departments of 20 hospitals.
