US-guided foreign body removal is a nonsurgical highly effective technique used to manage symptomatic foreign bodies and should be considered as a first-line treatment procedure. The authors describe a technique used for US detection and US-guided removal of various types of foreign bodies and discuss the efficacy of the procedure. Soft-tissue foreign bodies can result from accidents or medical procedures, and they are a relatively frequent reason that patients obtain medical consultation.

Objective: A high ratio of soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase-1 (sFlt-1) to placental growth factor (PlGF) has been linked to pre-eclampsia (PE). We evaluated the sFlt-1/PlGF ratio as a predictive marker for early-onset PE in women at risk of PE.

FT-IR and Raman spectra of bis(4-aminophenyl)diphenylsilane (DIA) and a dicarboxylic acid containing the imide function and a L-alanine moiety (L-ALA) and their resultant polymer (PALA) were recorded in the 500-4000 cm(-1) and 400-3800 cm(-1) regions, respectively. The optically active poly(imide-amide) obtained has two sp(3) carbons in the main chain, favoring its flexibility. Raman analysis identifies the fluorescence produced by the electronic conjugation between the aromatic rings and the amidic groups, which affects the molecular fine structure.

Exploratory gaze movements are fundamental for gathering the most relevant information regarding the partner during social interactions. Inspired by the cognitive mechanisms underlying human social behaviour, we have designed and implemented a system for a dynamic attention allocation which is able to actively control gaze movements during a visual action recognition task exploiting its own action execution predictions. Our humanoid robot is able, during the observation of a partner's reaching movement, to contextually estimate the goal position of the partner's hand and the location in space of the candidate targets.

1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-3-phosphoglycerocholine membranes were deposited onto a silicon substrate (Si/SiO(2)) using physical vapor deposition with in situ ellipsometric thickness control. Along several heating cycles it was possible to identify well-defined boundaries for gel, ripple, liquid crystalline, and fluid-disordered phases. Particularly, the second order transition between gel and ripple phase was clearly identified in the range of ~28-34 °C using Raman spectroscopy.

The oropharingeal dysphagia is a very prevalent syndrome among the elderly, and even more among institutionalized individuals. Dysphagia is frequently caused by neurodegenerative and cerebrovascular conditions, the dementia syndrome being the most common of them, where the latest stages of the process are often accompanied by frequent swallowing problems requiring to incorporate thick foodstuffs in the diet of the elderly, such as the pudding. Food fortification with a proper zinc compound is an economic and effective strategy to prevent zinc deficiency. BioZn-AAS, a zinc gluconate stabilized with glycine, was compared with zinc sulfate (reference standard), zinc hydroxide, and zinc gluconate, all of them labeled with (65)Zn. Radio-iron tests are frequently used to measure the bioavailability of different iron sources for food fortification. As the labeling procedures must be done under laboratory conditions, complementary studies should be carried out to evaluate the bioavailability of iron sources produced on an industrial scale. The iron bioavailability of SFE-171 (ferrous sulfate microencapsulated with phospholipids) was studied in previous reports using the compounds labeled with 59Fe and 55Fe; the results showed an iron bioavailability similar to that of ferrous sulfate.

The authors describe four cases of subependymoma studied with computed tomography (CT) and review 18 previously reported cases in an attempt to define the most characteristic CT presentation of this rare, benign tumor. Subependymoma usually appears as an isodense, or even hypodense, intraventricular tumor on plain CT scan and shows minimal or no enhancement in postcontrast studies. Differential diagnosis between subependymoma and the more malignant true ependymoma is difficult, particularly when the tumor occurs in the posterior fossa.

A group of 78 severe head injury patients showing computerized tomography (CT) findings of the so-called "diffuse axonal injury" is analyzed. These patients represent 20% of the authors' series of severe head injury.
