Article Synopsis
  • Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a condition caused by a lack of thiamine (vitamin B1), with brain MRI being the main diagnostic tool despite its limited sensitivity.
  • A study analyzed 41 hospitalized patients with WE, revealing that one-third had MRI hyperintensities indicative of the syndrome and that poor diet history correlated with specific brain changes.
  • Results showed that higher doses of thiamine given at admission correlated with fewer typical MRI findings and improved recovery outcomes, emphasizing the importance of prompt thiamine treatment.
