Selenium-independent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of thioredoxin reductase inhibition in alveolar macrophages.

Aims: Interleukin-1β (IL-1β) contributes to the development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Thioredoxin reductase-1 (Txnrd1) inhibition activates nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-dependent responses. Txnrd1 activity is selenium (Se) dependent and Se deficiency is common in prematurity.
