Article Synopsis
  • ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) protocols are designed to improve surgical outcomes by reducing complications, hospital stay, and enhancing patient satisfaction, but actual use among surgeons is low and inconsistent.
  • A survey conducted among 797 general surgeons in Ontario found that only 20% consistently applied all nine ERAS practices, with higher adherence rates observed in specific postoperative care aspects.
  • Surgeons in academic hospitals reported using more ERAS behaviors compared to those in smaller community hospitals, but factors like fellowship training did not significantly impact ERAS utilization rates.

Article Synopsis
  • In Canada, physician assistants (PAs) are becoming more important in helping with surgeries, but not much research has been done about their impact.
  • A study tracked how one full-time PA worked with an Acute Care Surgery (ACS) team for a year, recording various patient interactions and surgeries.
  • The findings showed that the PA was involved in over half of patient encounters and helped with team meetings, improving patient care and hospital organization.

Background: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols after colorectal surgery use several perioperative, intraoperative and postoperative interventions that decrease morbidity, length of stay, and improve patient satisfaction. ERAS is increasingly being considered standard of care; however, uptake of formalized protocols remains low. The objective is to characterize the provincial rates of ERAS utilization after colorectal surgery and identify barriers and limitations to ERAS implementation.
