Background: Home mechanical ventilation (HMV) is indicated in patients with severe hypercapnic COPD. Initiation of HMV commonly occurs during an inpatient period, but there has been increasing interest for outpatient adaptation. This study aimed to evaluate the outpatient initiation and adaptation of HMV and its impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with severe COPD.

We aimed to evaluate the patients' perspectives regarding home mechanical ventilation (HMV) follow up in an outpatient setting and ascertain differences between patients that started HMV in the outpatient setting compared to other settings.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted with patients with chronic respiratory failure under HMV in the Outpatient Ventilation Clinic.
Background: It is fundamental to optimize and retain health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in the long term in patients with home mechanical ventilation (HMV). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the evolution of the HRQoL in patients already established on HMV across a period of 5 years and whether the HRQoL is associated with mortality.
Methods: This was a 5-year longitudinal cohort study conducted in an Outpatient Ventilation Clinic.
Unlabelled: is a bacterium that belongs to the Enterobacteriaceae family. The most frequently reported infections are gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary. Urinary tract infections are very rarely reported and bloodstream infections are usually reported without an identified source.

The aim of this study was to provide an accurate description of the current practices and clinical characteristics of COPD patients on HMV in Portugal.
Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional, multicenter real-life study of COPD patients established on HMV for at least 30 days.
Introduction: Neuromuscular diseases (NMD) are a group of rare heterogeneous disorders that may be accompanied by respiratory muscle weakness. The simplest measurements of respiratory muscle strength are maximum inspiratory pressure (P) and maximum expiratory pressure (P) of the mouth. Inspiratory muscle weakness can also be evaluated by the sniff test (sniff nasal inspiratory pressure method).

Rationale: Carcinoid tumors are derived from neuroendocrine cells and are most frequently found in the gastrointestinal tract and bronchopulmonary system. They are generally characterized by an indolent clinical course but may in some instances spread to regional lymph nodes or to distant sites. Subcutaneous metastases of carcinoid tumors are extremely rare; there are only few cases reported in the literature and the site of the primary tumor was mainly the gastrointestinal tract.

Methods: All consecutive newly NSCLC patients with known smoking status diagnosed between 2011 and 2015 were included in this retrospective cohort study.
Background: The 8th edition of the tumor, node and metastasis (TNM) classification of lung cancer will be enacted in January 2017. The aim of this study was to analyze the survival differences among the three new categories of metastatic disease: intrathoracic metastasis (M1a), single extrathoracic metastasis (M1b) and multiple extrathoracic metastases (M1c) in our cohort of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
Methods: This is a retrospective single-center study including NSCLC patients with metastatic disease at diagnosis.
Introduction: Secondary hyperparathyroidism is the target of several therapeutic strategies, including the use of cinacalcet. Most studies were done only in hemodialysis patients, with few data from peritoneal dialysis patients.
Objective: The aim of our work was to evaluate the effectiveness of cinacalcet in secondary hyperparathyroidism in a one-center peritoneal dialysis patients.
Introduction: In a patient with previous radically treated lung adenocarcinoma, the detection of a new lung cancer raises the question whether recurrence or a second primary lung cancer is involved. Current criteria for differentiating multiple lung tumors lack a biologic and molecular basis and may lead to misclassification with impact on survival.
Objectives: We report the case of a female patient with a recent diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma and a previous lung adenocarcinoma submitted to curative surgical therapy 4 years before.
Schwannoma is a neurogenic tumor originating from the nerve sheath Schwann cells. Intrathoracic location is rare, and the endobronchial location is exceptional. Schwannoma is a rare tumor; the majority of lesions are benign and usually asymptomatic.

This technique has proved to be effective in different types of respiratory failure. In this article, the authors revise the advantages and limitations of NIV, interfaces used and indications in acute and acute-on-chronic respiratory failure.

Four patient populations are known as having better response to TKI as opposed to other patients: adenocarcinoma patients, non-smokers, women and asians. Nevertheless, a good general status remains a predictive factor for treatment response.
