The aim of the study was to substantiate the necessity of efficient therapeutic cooperation between the doctor and the patient. The main factors determining such cooperation are considered including odontological behaviour of the physician, the choice of the adequate treatment model, compliance with the principles and rules of medical ethics, deontological requirements regulating the patient/physician relationship. Special attention is given to such issues as the doctor’s authority, patient’s confidence, and professional preparation of the first patient’s visit.

Major aspects of medical deontology are discussed with respect to elderly patients, such as "do no harm" and "do good" principles, principles of justness and patients' rights. The importance of considering psychological characteristics of this age group is emphasized. Deontological errors ensuing from the lack of attention on the part of physicians to patients of this category and from the underestimation of the age factor are discussed.

Familial benign polycythemia (FBP) (OMIM 263400) is a rare autosomal recessive condition characterized by erythrocytosis, normal leukocyte and platelet counts, normal uric acid level, and usually increased erythropoietin production. There is a high incidence of this disorder in Chuvashia (Russian Federation), probably due to a founder effect. In an attempt to locate the gene responsible for this disorder, we have carried out linkage studies in 12 Chuvash families, with 35 affected and 32 unaffected members.
