The present study evaluated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of (CA) fruit extract against bisphenol A (BPA)-induced ovarian injury in female Wistar rats. The antioxidant activity was estimated by the total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and superoxide radical (NBT) content. For the in vivo analyses, 24 animals were divided into the following 4 groups: the control group; the BPA group (50 mg/kg BW BPA for 30 days); the BPA  + CA group (50 mg/kg BW BPA and 50 mg/kg BW CA); and the CA group (50 mg/kg BW CA).

is particularly known for its abundance in soils and its plant growth promotion. To characterize the metabolites excreted by this specie, we performed successive liquid/liquid extractions from bacteria culture medium with different polarity solvents (cyclohexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and butanol) to separate the metabolites in different polarity groups. The extracts were characterized regarding their total phenolic content, the amount of reducing sugar, the concentration of primary amines and proteins, their chromatographic profile by HPLC-DAD-ELSD and their chemical identification by GC-MS.

Background: Urtica dioica (Urticaceae) has outstanding medicinal and pharmacological properties. This investigation was aimed to assess the chemical composition, the total polyphenol and flavonoid content, antioxidant, anti-proliferative, and anti-inflammatory effects of Urtica dioica essential oil (UDEO)

Methods: GC/MS analysis was performed to assess the chemical composition, standard antioxidative test, the DPPH assay, the reducing power assay, as well as the anti-proliferative capacities of UDEO against HeLa cell lines using the MTT test. In addition, the anti-inflammatory activities of UDEO were evaluated using paw thickness measurements in rats with carrageenan-induced paw edema and pathologic evaluation of inflammation in paw sections.

In the last two decades, phosphorus (P) recovery from sewage sludge liquors gained much interest for its high-quality product potential. However, the consistently reported constraints are the low phosphorus availability and the technical-economical difficulties to increase it through chemical acidification. This article discusses the mechanisms of phosphorus dissolution by the biological acidification process (Biological acidification or acidic fermentation) as an alternative to chemical acidification.

Fighting against the emergent coronavirus disease (COVID-19) remains a big challenge at the front of the world communities. Recent research has outlined the potential of various medicinal herbs to counteract the infection. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction of artemisinin, a sesquiterpene lactone extracted from the genus, and its derivatives with the SARS-CoV-2 main protease.

Phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge as secondary raw materials or as a direct P-rich fertiliser is one of the top frontrunner solutions to tackle Phosphorus (P) scarcity and depletion. However, the efficiency of this P recovery process greatly depends on its phosphorus dissolution potential, which in return relies on the phosphorus speciation in the sewage sludge. This article investigates the potential correlation between P speciation in sewage sludge and the iron-based P removal technologies used in sewage treatment plants (STP) through an innovative sequential extraction method based on the SEDEX method that distinguishes quantitatively between ferrous bound phosphate and ferric bound phosphate.

Breast cancer bone metastases (BCBM) result in serious skeletal morbidity. Although there have been important advances in cancer treatment methods such as surgery and chemotherapy, the complementary treatments, such as α-tocopherol acetate (ATA), still remain of key role via complementary and/or synergistic effects. The aim of this work was to study immune response in a rat model of BCBM due to Walker 256/B cells inoculation and the effect of ATA alone.

Polyaniline (PANI) was chemically doped and functionalized with single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). Various characterization methods were employed to study the structure and optical properties of PANI/SWCNTs nanocomposite, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical absorption, and stationary photoluminescence. Additionally, a theoretical study using density functional theory calculations was also carried out.

This study is aimed to elucidate the possible antioxidant and protective effects of essential oil (ACEO) against the deleterious effects of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in rats. The study revealed increases in aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activities and the serum contents of creatinine, urea, uric acid, cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoproteins (LDL), and glucose in rats treated with CPF as compared to controls. Meanwhile, hepatic and renal activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in liver and kidney decreased and the content of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased.

Recycling phosphorus from waste activated sludge has attracted a lot of interest to tackle the problem of phosphorus stocks depletion and the increase in food demand. In this study, the use of fermentation processes was investigated to enhance phosphorus dissolution from waste activated sludge to improve its recycling. Two fermentation processes, bioacidification and dark fermentation, were used on two different sludges fermented with wheat starch syrup in continuous operating conditions.

A polarizable interatomic potential is developed for atomistic simulations of molten MNO (M = Li, Na, K) salts. The potential is parametrized using a force matching method relying on the adjustment of parameters such that density functional theory generated forces, stress tensors, and dipole moments are reproduced. Simulations conducted using the new potential are used to estimate physical parameters of the melt, which are then compared with available experimental results.

Aerobic pre-treatment of food waste (FW) was performed at different oxygen concentrations (0%, 5%, 10% and 21%O) and different durations (1, 2, 3 and 4 days) to investigate its impact on biochemical and microbial community characteristics of the waste and its ability to improve anaerobic biodegradability. Whatever the duration, the highest effect of pre-treatment was observed at full aerobic pre-treatment (21%O) while 5%O and 10%O showed lower transformation performances. Biochemical variations at 21%O were mainly a decrease of simple carbohydrates, volatile fatty acids (VFA) and low molecular weight water soluble compounds and an increase of high weight water soluble compounds.
