BK hemorrhagic cystitis (BK-HC) is a common complication following hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), particularly when posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy) is used as graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis. However, comparative studies of BK-HC incidence in matched sibling donors (MSD) and unrelated donors (MUD) often include small haploidentical (HAPLO) donor cohorts and usually lack detailed information on disease evolution, coinfections, management and impact on outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence, risk factors, and outcomes in patients with hematologic malignancies undergoing HSCT from MSD, MUD, HAPLO donors using PTCy as GVHD prophylaxis.

The Effect of Xanthohumol and Thymol on Filamentation and Its Impact on the Structure, Size, and Cell Viability of Biofilms Developed over Implant Surfaces.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of xanthohumol and thymol on the impact of on the structure, size and cell viability of subgingival biofilms formed on dental implant surfaces. The structure and microbial biomass of biofilms developed after 72 h, treated and untreated with both extracts, were compared by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser microscopy (CLSM). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) was used to quantify the number of viable and total microorganisms of each of the biofilm-forming strains in each condition.

Peri-implant bone regeneration in pigs.

Purpose: To review the current literature to answer the focused question: in the experimental pig model (population), which types of peri-implant bone defects (exposure) have been used evaluate different modes of therapy and what is their capacity for spontaneous healing and regeneration (outcome)?

Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, electronic databases were searched for studies reporting peri-implant bone defects in the maxillae or mandibles of pigs. Those studies which reported a control group of untreated defects with assessment of spontaneous regeneration [new bone area (BA)] and/or re-osseointegration [new bone-to-implant contact (BIC)] via quantitative radiography or histomorphometry were included in a random effects meta-analysis for the outcomes BA and BIC.

Results: Overall, 21 studies, mostly performed in the mandibles of minipigs, were included.

Heisenberg-Limited Quantum Lidar for Joint Range and Velocity Estimation.

We propose a quantum lidar protocol to jointly estimate the range and velocity of a target by illuminating it with a single beam of pulsed displaced squeezed light. In the lossless scenario, we show that the mean-squared errors of both range and velocity estimations are inversely proportional to the squared number of signal photons, simultaneously attaining the Heisenberg limit. This is achieved by engineering the multiphoton squeezed state of the temporal modes and adopting standard homodyne detection.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), characterized by their undifferentiated and multipotent nature, can be derived from various sources, including bone marrow, adipose, and dental tissues. Among these, dental MSCs (DSCs) exhibit universal MSC characteristics and are attracting considerable attention for regenerating oral and craniofacial tissues. This review provides a contemporary overview of recently published clinical studies using DSCs for various orodental and maxillofacial regenerative applications, including bone, periodontal, and endodontic regeneration.

Recycling the rain: Exploring forest management practices in a western Mediterranean watershed to recouple the atmospheric and terrestrial water cycle.

Current knowledge of the role that forests play in recycling rainwater has led to the proposal of forest management practices to mitigate desertification in the western Mediterranean basin. Building upon this hypothesis, we present the Mijares watershed in eastern Spain as a detailed case study. We then perform a scientific literature review in the context of the western Mediterranean basin to identify the physical and biophysical uncertainties associated with forest management practices that aim to strengthen the atmospheric and terrestrial components of the water cycle.

Rectal swabs (122) from pediatric patients were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for the detection of EPEC and STEC. STEC isolates were tested for the presence of stx1, stx2, eae, saa and ehxA. All eae-positive samples were tested for the presence of bfpA, and antigen O was determined using the agglutination test.

The management of severe mucogingival deformities surrounding malpositioned implants represents a complex issue with a high risk of aesthetic failure. The present case report describes a mucogingival and restorative approach for the treatment of severe localized peri-implant tissue deficiencies with interproximal bone loss combined with an interproximal gingival recession on the adjacent natural tooth. This consists of maintaining a non-restorable malpositioned implant, submerging it through one or multiple vertical soft tissue augmentations, according to the defect severity, and delivering a tooth supported bridge involving the adjacent natural teeth.

Background: Depression is a chronic psychiatric disease of multifactorial etiology, and its pathophysiology is not fully understood.
