Feruloylation of arabinoxylan (AX) in grass cell walls is a key determinant of recalcitrance to enzyme attack, making it a target for improvement of grass crops, and of interest in grass evolution. Definitive evidence on the genes responsible is lacking so we studied a candidate gene that we identified within the BAHD acyl-CoA transferase family. We used RNA interference (RNAi) silencing of orthologs in the model grasses Setaria viridis (SvBAHD01) and Brachypodium distachyon (BdBAHD01) and determined effects on AX feruloylation.

Mammalian protection against leishmanial infection depends on the development of an effective immune response. Using dual-photoelectrode photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices based on earth-abundant metal oxides for unbiased water splitting is an attractive means of producing green H fuel, but is challenging, owing to low photovoltages generated by PEC cells. This problem can be solved by coupling n-type BiVO with n-type Bi V O to create a virtual p/n junction due to the formation of a hole-inversion layer at the semiconductor interface. Small molecule mitochondrial uncouplers transport protons from the mitochondrial inner membrane space into the mitochondrial matrix independent of ATP synthase, uncoupling nutrient metabolism from ATP generation. The therapeutic potential of mitochondrial uncouplers has been investigated for the treatment of metabolic diseases such as obesity and type 2 diabetes (T2D), ischemia-reperfusion injury, and neurodegenerative diseases. Despite its low NDF digestibility, sugarcane is an option for feeding dairy cattle in tropical regions. We evaluated the effect of sugarcane silages inoculated with CCMA 0170 (LH; an epiphytic bacteria isolated from sugarcane) or with NCIMB 40788 (LB; a commercial strain isolated from temperate grasses) on dairy cow performance and feeding behavior. Background: Data on disability are regularly collected by different institutions or ministries using specific tools for different purposes, for instance to estimate the prevalence of disability or eligibility of specific populations for social benefits. The interoperability of disability data collected in countries is essential for policy making and to monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The first objective of this paper is to map and compare tools that collect data on disability for different purposes, more specifically the Brazilian National Health Survey and the Brazilian Functioning Index to the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank Model Disability Survey (MDS), currently recommended as a standard tool for disability measurement.

Sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) is a bioactive lipid involved in cell signaling and, if released from cells, also plays a crucial role in regulating the trafficking of lympho-hematopoietic cells, including primitive hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). It has been demonstrated that S1P chemoattracts HSPCs, and its level in peripheral blood creates a gradient directing egress of these cells during mobilization. In this paper we analyzed hematopoiesis in mice deficient in sphingosine kinase 2 (Sphk2-KO mice) and studied the effect of this mutation on plasma S1P levels.

We demonstrate the creation of anisotropic patchy silver nanospheroids (AgNSs) using linearly polarized UV light and a photo-uncaging o-nitrobenzyl-based ligand, which anchors to the AgNSs by two gold-sulfur bonds. Exposure to a 1 J/cm dose of UV light induces a photo-uncaging reaction in the ligand that reveals a primary amine on the surface. By using linearly polarized UV light, we meter the exposure dose such that only the poles of the nanoparticle receive a full dose, limiting the photo-uncaging reaction primarily to the particle's plasmonic hot spots.

A facile method for the preparation of β-boryl-α-silyl aryl acrylamides using phenyllithium, dimethylphenylsilylpinacolborane, and propargylamides is reported. A key feature of this transition metal-free reaction is the Brønsted base deprotonation of aryl secondary propargylamide to produce a Lewis base that activates the B-Si bond, which is followed by a sequential intramolecular α-silylation-trans-β-borylation. The reaction proceeds in complete regio- and stereoselectivity.

This paper deals with the evaluation of an exoskeleton designed for assisting individuals to rehabilitate compromised lower limb movements resulting from stroke or incomplete spinal cord injury. The exoskeleton is composed of lightweight tubular structures and six free joints that provide a modular feature to the system. This feature allows the exoskeleton to be adapted to assist the movement of one or more patient joints.
