[Evaluation of a pharmaceutical care program to improve adherence to antiretroviral therapy].

Objective: To establish the impact of a pharmaceutical care program on the improvement of adherence to antiretroviral therapy, and on patient immunologic and virologic outcome.

Materials And Methods: A multicenter, observational, prospective study in a HIV-infected patient cohort under treatment with antiretrovirals selected by random sampling in 19 Spanish hospitals. The study lasted 12 months, in which the program was applied through a baseline preprocedural visit and 4 quarterly visits.

[Mammary phyllodes tumor. A clinico-pathological review of 14 cases].

We report a retrospective analysis of 14 female patients, aged 20 to 62 years old, with phyllodes tumors of the breast. The tumors were located in the right breast in nine patients and their diameter ranged from 2.5 to 28 cm.

Respiratory adaptation in the highest inhabitants and highest Sherpa mountaineers.

Arterial blood gases, acid-base and hematocrit of six highest inhabitants on Aucanquilcha (5950 m) in Chile were studied. These blood gases were compared with the alveolar gases of highest mountain climbers in Nepal, Sherpas and acclimatized lowlanders, and on average high altitude natives in the Chilean and Peruvian Andes and in the Nepal Himalayas. Different hematologic responses to hypoxia in Sherpas and Quechua Indians.

Previous studies of the erythropoietic response to hypoxia in high-altitude natives suggest that the hematocrit and hemoglobin values in Himalayan natives (Sherpas) are lower than expected for the altitude, perhaps because of a genetic adaptation. However, differences in sampling techniques and experimental methods make comparisons difficult. Our studies were carried out to compare the erythropoietic response with the same altitude in age-matched natives of the Himalayas and Andes by the same experimental techniques.

Exocytosis of cortical granules from activated oocytes of the toad, Bufo arenarum.

Observation of the cortical region of oocytes of Bufo arenarum by transmission electron microscopy reveals modifications on their surface and in the contents of the cortical granules (CG) during activation. In non-activated oocytes only amorphous cortical granules (ACG) can be observed. Activated oocytes display ACG, intermediate cortical granules containing both amorphous and membranous material (ICG), and a third type containing only membranous material (MCG).

Testosterone-induced alterations in the reactivity pattern of the neurons in the arcuate nucleus of male mice. A karyometric study.

The effects of testosterone administration on the hypothalamic arcuate nucleus were studied in adult male mice by means of karyometry. Four animals per group were sacrificed 1, 2, and 3 h after intramuscular injection of 100 micrograms testosterone propionate/100 g body weight. The nuclear diameter of neurons was measured in serial coronal sections.

The effects of pimozide, a dopamine receptor-blocking agent, were studied in the pars intermedia of the rat. The animals received 100 microgram/100 g pimozide daily for 2, 5, 10, 15 and 20 days. Pimozide induces ultrastructural changes after 5 days of treatment.

Localization of adenylate cyclase in the neurointermediate lobe of the rat pituitary. Ultrastructural cytochemistry.

The ultrastructural localization of adenylate cyclase was accomplished cytochemically in the neurointermediate lobe of Sprague-Dawley rats. The main concentration of the reaction product was found on the plasmalemma of neurosecretory nerve fibers, their terminals and plasma membranes of pituicytes. Positive reaction for adenylate cyclase was found less regularly in endothelial cells, pericapillary spaces and processes of the basal lamin.

Male rats ten days of age were divided in three groups: a) hemicastrated, b) sham operated and c) control. They were daily sacrificed between 30 and 50 days of age. Wet weight and dry weight were determined in testis, seminal vesicles and epididymis.

Ultrastucture of the male rat hypophysis chronically grafted under the kidney capsule.

Male rats were divided in two experimental groups. In group I two partes distales of the hypophysis were grafted under the kidney capsule and in group II two complete hypophyses were transplanted. Animals were killed 5 to 22 months after the operation.

Reversible ultrastructural changes of arcuate neurons after vinblastine injection into the median eminence of the rat.

The ultrastructural effects of vinblastine on the arcuate neurons and median eminence were studied in the rat. The animals were stereotaxically injected with solutions of 1 mM and 5 mM vinblastine into the median eminence and killed 3, 8 and 21 days after injection. Eight days after injection of 1 mM vinblastine the neurons of the arcuate nucleus showed marked changes.
