Sorting grids to exclude the juveniles of species targeted by bottom trawl fisheries from the catch are among the most promising solutions to reduce discards. We tested a two-sections Juveniles' Sorting Grid (JSG) in a Mediterranean fisheries restricted area. First, we provided information on the vitality of individuals escaping from the JSG bars during towing, by analysing underwater footage.

Despite advancements in technologies such as time-lapse microscopy and artificial intelligence, the gold standard for embryo selection still relies on standard morphological assessment. Several studies have investigated the correlation between blastocyst characteristics (expansion status, inner cell mass, and trophectoderm) and clinical outcomes, reaching contradictory results. In consideration of these ambiguities in the literature, we performed a retrospective study of 1546 untested first-vitrified-warmed single day 5/6 blastocyst transfers.

Color centers integrated with nanophotonic devices have emerged as a compelling platform for quantum science and technology. Here, we integrate tin-vacancy centers in a diamond waveguide and investigate the interaction with light at the single-photon level in both reflection and transmission. We observe single-emitter-induced extinction of the transmitted light up to 25% and measure the nonlinear effect on the photon statistics.

  • The study aimed to evaluate how well oocytes (egg cells) mature in a lab setting after being rescued through in vitro maturation (IVM).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 24 studies to compare the outcomes of these lab-matured oocytes with those matured naturally in vivo.
  • Results indicated that lab-matured oocytes had lower rates of fertilization and pregnancy, but for patients with poor responses, using IVM could still enhance treatment outcomes, especially if the maturation process is kept under 6 hours.

The intrusion of relatively warm water onto the continental shelf is widely recognized as a threat to Antarctic ice shelves and glaciers grounded below sea level, as enhanced ocean heat increases their basal melt. While the circulation of warm water has been documented on the East Antarctic continental shelf, the modes of warm water transport from the deep ocean onto the shelf are still uncertain. This makes predicting the future responses of major East Antarctic marine-grounded glaciers, such as Totten and Ninnis glaciers, particularly challenging.

Artificial atoms in solids are leading candidates for quantum networks, scalable quantum computing, and sensing, as they combine long-lived spins with mobile photonic qubits. Recently, silicon has emerged as a promising host material where artificial atoms with long spin coherence times and emission into the telecommunications band can be controllably fabricated. This field leverages the maturity of silicon photonics to embed artificial atoms into the world's most advanced microelectronics and photonics platform.

Colour centres in diamond have emerged as a leading solid-state platform for advancing quantum technologies, satisfying the DiVincenzo criteria and recently achieving quantum advantage in secret key distribution. Blueprint studies indicate that general-purpose quantum computing using local quantum communication networks will require millions of physical qubits to encode thousands of logical qubits, presenting an open scalability challenge. Here we introduce a modular quantum system-on-chip (QSoC) architecture that integrates thousands of individually addressable tin-vacancy spin qubits in two-dimensional arrays of quantum microchiplets into an application-specific integrated circuit designed for cryogenic control.

  • * The survey revealed a median knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) score of 14 out of 29 among 1,702 participants, with higher scores linked to attending classical High Schools, being sexually active, and having received the HPV vaccine.
  • * Notably, students who sought information from TikTok had better KAP scores, while being heterosexual was associated with lower scores, indicating a need for urgent school-based interventions to enhance sexual health education among this demographic.

  • This study investigates the real-life efficacy of sotrovimab, a treatment for COVID-19, particularly in light of concerns about its effectiveness against Omicron variants, by analyzing patient records from three hospitals in Italy.
  • The research evaluated 689 COVID-19 patients in 2022, finding that those treated with sotrovimab had significantly lower rates of disease progression and mortality compared to those who received no treatment, with notable results showing that vaccination also contributed to reduced risk.
  • Key risk factors for disease progression included older age, cardiovascular disease, fever, and dyspnea, while vaccination and sotrovimab treatment were linked to a decreased chance of severe illness, revealing important

In respiratory infections, anemia is both a consequence of acute inflammation and a predictor of poor clinical outcomes. There are few studies investigating the role of anemia in COVID-19, suggesting a potential role in predicting disease severity. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between the presence of anemia at admission and incidence of severe disease and death in patients hospitalized for COVID-19.

Introduction: Remdesivir (REM) and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) could alleviate severe COVID-19 in at-risk outpatients. However, data on their use in hospitalized patients, particularly in elderly or immunocompromised hosts, are lacking.

Methods: All consecutive patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at our unit from 1 July 2021 to 15 March 2022 were retrospectively enrolled.

Antarctica's continental margins pose an unknown submarine landslide-generated tsunami risk to Southern Hemisphere populations and infrastructure. Understanding the factors driving slope failure is essential to assessing future geohazards. Here, we present a multidisciplinary study of a major submarine landslide complex along the eastern Ross Sea continental slope (Antarctica) that identifies preconditioning factors and failure mechanisms.

A central goal for quantum technologies is to develop platforms for precise and scalable control of individually addressable artificial atoms with efficient optical interfaces. Color centers in silicon, such as the recently-isolated carbon-related G-center, exhibit emission directly into the telecommunications O-band and can leverage the maturity of silicon-on-insulator photonics. We demonstrate the generation, individual addressing, and spectral trimming of G-center artificial atoms in a silicon-on-insulator photonic integrated circuit platform.

Human embryos are very frequently affected by maternally inherited aneuploidies, which in the vast majority of cases determine developmental failure at pre- or post-implantation stages. However, recent evidence, generated by the alliance between diverse technologies now routinely employed in the IVF laboratory, has revealed a broader, more complex scenario. Aberrant patterns occurring at the cellular or molecular level can impact at multiple stages of the trajectory of development to blastocyst.

Study Question: How is the acquisition and testing of theoretical and practical knowledge in Clinical Embryology and the licensing of ART laboratory personnel carried out in European countries?

Summary Answer: Twelve out of 31 European countries have established some kind of verification of laboratory competency and skills in ART: in 7 countries, this was related to licensing, but where organized education for Clinical Embryologists existed, there were vast differences in the way these processes were undertaken.

What Is Known Already: In 2015, a report by the ESHRE Embryology Certification Committee concluded that regardless of the large number of people working in IVF laboratories, Clinical Embryology was only recognized as an official profession in 3 out of 27 European national health systems. In most countries, Clinical Embryologists needed to be officially registered under an alternative profession and there were limited opportunities for organized education in this specialist field.

Migrant populations are more susceptible to viral hepatitis and HIV due to the epidemiology from their country of origin or their social vulnerability when they arrive in Europe. The aims of the study are to explore the incidence of HIV and HCV in low-wage agricultural migrant workers and their knowledge, attitude, and practice with regard to HIV and HCV, as well as their sexual behaviour and risk factors. As part of the mobile clinic services, we performed a screening campaign for HIV-HCV involving migrants living in three Apulian establishments.

In Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser Syndrome (MRKHS) patients who are scheduled for laparoscopic vaginoplasty and have a desire for biological motherhood, we propose that a concomitant laparoscopic oocyte retrieval for cryopreservation is performed. Oocyte retrieval is pursued at the beginning of the laparoscopy. Right and left 5 mm trocars are positioned, through which a 17 G ovum aspiration needle is used for puncture of the right and left ovaries, respectively.
