In children with acute leukemia (AL), the mortality rate from carbapenemase (KPC)-producing bloodstream infection (KPC-KpBSI) exceeds 50%, highest when active treatment is delayed. Neutropenic KPC- carriers are at high risk of KPC-KpBSI, and preemptive empiric antibiotic treatment (EAT) of febrile neutropenic episodes (FNEs) active against KPC- may reduce this mortality. We conducted an 8-year (2014-2021) retrospective observational study of 112 febrile neutropenic episodes (FNEs) in 32 children with AL who were KPC- carriers: standard EAT for 39 FNEs and active EAT for 73 FNEs (52 ceftazidime/avibactam (CAZAVI)-based and 21 colistin-based combinations, and 5 CAZAVI monotherapy).

Patients And Methods: A 7-year (2013-2019) retrospective observational cohort study was conducted at the Haematology, Sapienza Rome University (Italy) on 94 febrile neutropenia episodes (FNE) in AL patients KPC- carriers treated with active EAT.

Results: Eighty-two (87%) FNE were empirically treated with antibiotic combinations [38 colistin-based and 44 ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZAVI)-based], 12 with CAZAVI monotherapy. Successful outcomes were observed in 88/94 (94%) FNE, 46/49 (94%) microbiologically documented infections, and 24/27 (89%) gram-negative bloodstream infections (GNB-BSI).

This study aimed to examine the effect of cognitive priming linked to the COVID-19 pandemic, through state anxiety and personal need for structure, on teachers' tendency toward sustainability and teachers' tendency toward a conservative socio-economic vision. We involved a sample of 984 Italian teachers, and by manipulating the saliency of the COVID-19 pandemic, we found that the saliency of the COVID-19 pandemic positively impacted state anxiety and that state anxiety impacted teachers' tendency toward sustainability both directly and indirectly through the mediational role of the personal need for structure. Finally, we found that state anxiety only indirectly through the personal need for structure impacted teachers' tendency toward a conservative socio-economic vision.

An integration of laboratory radon and thoron exhalation data with gamma radiation mapping is applied to assess the geogenic radon and the exposure of people to natural radiation in a highly-urbanized city (Roma, Italy). The study area is a protected territory where ignimbrites from Colli Albani volcano and alluvial sediments largely crop out. A map of total gamma radiation, a gamma transect across Caffarella valley and 9 vertical gamma profiles have been carried out, showing that the main control of gamma levels is, of course, the lithological nature, without neglecting the simultaneous effect of other parameters such as slope morphology, erosion/weathering processes, occurrence of sinkholes or underground tunnels.

Background: The aim of this study was to report the results of percutaneous endovascular aortic aneurysm repair (PEVAR) using the superficial femoral artery (SFA) for large bore vessel access.

Methods: We reviewed all PEVAR procedures at our institution over an 18-month period, identifying all patients who underwent PEVAR with the use of one or both SFAs for endograft delivery with dual ProGlide large bore access closure. Indications for use of the SFA instead of the common femoral artery (CFA) included morbid obesity, CFA vessel wall disease, and scarring from previous CFA surgery.

We report our initial experience of performing integrated PET/MR imaging of the carotid arteries in psoriatic patients. Eleven patients with psoriasis and ten controls underwent carotid PET/MRI.
