Sindbis virus (SINV), is an of the family . This zoonotic arbovirus is transmitted by mosquitoes, primarily from the genus, with bird species acting as amplifying vertebrate hosts. Occasionally it can also affect humans that are accidental hosts.

Here, we report a cyclin-dependent kinase 6 (CDK6)-driven mechanism of cell cycle deregulation involved in endothelial cell proliferation and HHT pathology. Specifically, endothelial cells from the livers of HHT mice bypassed the G1/S checkpoint and progressed through the cell cycle at an accelerated pace.

In Mexico, there is a high burden of liver cancer mortality in rural states, affecting both women and men equally. Thus, we aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of hepatocellular cancer (HCC) by sex in Mexico.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTau aggregation plays a critical role in Alzheimer's Disease (AD), where tau neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) are a key pathological hallmark. While much attention has been given to NFTs, emerging evidence underscores nano-sized pre-NFT tau aggregates as potentially toxic entities in AD. By leveraging DNA-PAINT super-resolution microscopy, we visualized and quantified nanoscale tau aggregates (nano-aggregates) in human postmortem brain tissues from intermediate and advanced AD, and Primary Age-Related Tauopathy (PART).

The influx of infected cases from endemic to non-endemic malaria regions like Europe has resulted in a public health concern over sporadic local outbreaks. This is facilitated by the continued presence of competent vectors in non-endemic countries.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAvian malaria parasites provide an important model for studying host-pathogen interactions, yet understanding their dynamics in vectors under natural conditions is limited. We investigated the effect of vector abundance, species richness and diversity, and habitat characteristics on avian prevalence and lineage richness in across 45 urban, natural, and rural localities in southern Spain Analyzing 16,574 mosquitoes grouped in 768 mosquito pools, 32.7% exhibited parasite presence.

In Spain, although local circulation has been known for decades, until 2020, when a large outbreak occurred, West Nile Virus cases were scarce and mostly occurred in southern Spain. Since then, there have been new cases every year and the pathogen has spread to new regions.

Amphipods belonging to the Hyalella genus are macroinvertebrates that inhabit aquatic environments. They are of particular interest in areas such as limnology and ecotoxicology, where data on the number of Hyalella individuals and their allometric measurements are used to assess the environmental dynamics of aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we introduce HyACS, a software tool that uses a model developed with the YOLOv3's architecture to detect individuals, and digital image processing techniques to extract morphological metrics of the Hyalella genus.

The underlying mechanism and disease relevance of this abnormal cell proliferative state of the ECs remain unknown. Here, we report the identification of a CDK6-driven mechanism of cell cycle progression deregulation directly involved in EC proliferation and HHT vascular pathology.

Materials And Methods: We determined serum AFB-lys using mass spectrometry in a representative sample of 952 adults (weighted n = 7,493,354) from five states (Campeche, Chiapas, Tamaulipas, Veracruz and Yucatán) in 2018. We calculated overall and subgroup-specific frequency of detection and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) and median AFB-lys levels and quartiles.
Obesity-related type II diabetes (diabesity) has increased global morbidity and mortality dramatically. Previously, the ancient drug salicylate demonstrated promise for the treatment of type II diabetes, but its clinical use was precluded due to high dose requirements. In this study, we present a nitroalkene derivative of salicylate, 5-(2-nitroethenyl)salicylic acid (SANA), a molecule with unprecedented beneficial effects in diet-induced obesity (DIO).

Intratympanic gentamicin (ITG) is recognized as an effective treatment for uncontrolled MD characterized by persistent vertigo attacks despite therapy. The video head impulse test (vHIT) and skull vibration-induced nystagmus (SVIN) are validated.

ECLiPSE leverages 67 comprehensive shape descriptors encompassing geometric, boundary, skeleton and other properties, the majority of which are directly extracted from the localizations to accurately characterize individual structures. We validate ECLiPSE through unsupervised and supervised classification on a dataset featuring five distinct cellular structures, achieving exceptionally high classification accuracies nearing 100%.

The vector-borne West Nile virus (WNV) is transmitted between birds by mosquitos, but it can also infect humans and horses causing disease. The local circulation of WNV in Spain has been known for decades, and since 2010, there have been regular outbreaks in horses, although only six cases were reported in humans until 2019.

Here, we show that oxidative stress triggered by HO exposure induced efficient VE-cadherin proteolysis by MMPs and γ-secretase in human umbilical endothelial cells (HUVECs). The cytoplasmic domain of VE-cadherin produced by γ-secretase, VE-Cad/CTF2-a fragment that has eluded identification so far-could readily be detected after HO treatment.

Sirtuins (SIRTs), a family of NAD-dependent protein deacylases, play a pivotal role in the regulation of these inflammatory responses. Indeed, SIRTs have anti-inflammatory effects through a myriad of signaling cascades, including histone deacetylation and gene silencing, p65/RelA deacetylation and inactivation, and nucleotide‑binding oligomerization domain, leucine rich repeat, and pyrin domain‑containing protein 3 inflammasome inhibition.

This is done by inversion of a decision threshold, set with these values of sensitivity and specificity, in the probabilistic class-models computed by means of PLS-CM (Partial Least Squares for Class-Modelling). The characterization of the boundary hyperplanes, in the latent space (space spanned by the selected latent variables of the fitted PLS model) or in the input space, makes it possible to calculate directions that can be followed to move objects toward the class-model of interest.

In the particular case of the population screenings for local or regional diseases related to specific pathogens, the diagnosis of the presence of specific antibodies could drastically modify therapies and even the organization of public policies. The aim of this work was to develop a fast, cost-effective detection method based on the manipulation of functionalized magnetic beads for an efficient diagnosis of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP), looking for the presence of anti-pigeon antigen antibodies (APAA) in a patient's serum.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe Dilution Effect Hypothesis (DEH) argues that greater biodiversity lowers the risk of disease and reduces the rates of pathogen transmission since more diverse communities harbour fewer competent hosts for any given pathogen, thereby reducing host exposure to the pathogen. DEH is expected to operate most intensely in vector-borne pathogens and when species-rich communities are not associated with increased host density. Overall, dilution will occur if greater species diversity leads to a lower contact rate between infected vectors and susceptible hosts, and between infected hosts and susceptible vectors.
