This paper examines the evolution of the statures of Spanish male and female migrants who entered Mexico between the mid-nineteenth and the mid-twentieth century. Using the information contained in the National Registry of Foreigners created by the Mexican government, the paper also estimates the evolution of the gap between male and female migrants' heights. The inclusion of women and their heights in the registry allows the estimation of both male and female heights and the analysis of their evolution for a group of comparable individuals.

In this study, the virus-removal capacity of nanofiltration was assessed using validated laboratory scale models on a wide range of viruses (pseudorabies virus; human immunodeficiency virus; bovine viral diarrhea virus; West Nile virus; hepatitis A virus; murine encephalomyocarditis virus; and porcine parvovirus) with sizes from 18 nm to 200 nm and applying the different process conditions existing in a number of Grifols' plasma-derived manufacturing processes (thrombin, α1-proteinase inhibitor, Factor IX, antithrombin, plasmin, intravenous immunoglobulin, and fibrinogen). Spiking experiments (n = 133) were performed in process intermediate products, and removal was subsequently determined by infectivity titration. Reduction Factor (RF) was calculated by comparing the virus load before and after nanofiltration under each product purification condition.

The variant Creutfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) associated with the ingestion of cattle derived products affected with bovine spongiform encephalopathy. vCJD emerged in the UK, where most of the cases occurred (170 of 217 cases worldwide). Manufacturers of biological products must investigate the ability of their production processes to remove TSE agents.

A new human liquid intravenous immunoglobulin product, Flebogamma DIF, has been developed. This IgG is purified from human plasma by cold ethanol fractionation, PEG precipitation and ion exchange chromatography. The manufacturing process includes three different specific pathogen clearance (inactivation/removal) steps: pasteurization, solvent/detergent treatment and Planova nanofiltration with a pore size of 20 nm.

Human astroviruses (HAstV) are causative agents of viral gastroenteritis worldwide. A hypervariable region (HVR) is located close to the C-terminus of the nsP1a, and recent data support the involvement of the HVR-containing nonstructural protein in viral RNA replication processes, suggesting a correlation between variability in this region and pathogenic properties. The HVR of the C-terminal nsP1a coding region of 104 wild-type and reference isolates of HAstV was sequenced.

Human astrovirus nonstructural C-terminal nsP1a protein, which contains a hypervariable region (HVR) and colocalizes with the endoplasmic reticulum and viral RNA, has been suggested to be involved in the RNA replication process. Four viruses differing only in their C-terminal nsP1a protein, corresponding to HVR-derived genotypes IV, V, VI, and XII, were all able to replicate in CaCo-2 cells but displayed differences in their RNA replication and growth properties. Two overall patterns of replication were observed: types IV and V on one side, and types VI and XII on the other.

Computational and biological approaches were undertaken to characterize the role of the human astrovirus nonstructural protein nsP1a/4, located at the C-terminal fragment of nsP1a. Computer analysis reveals sequence similarities to other nonstructural viral proteins involved in RNA replication and/or transcription and allows the identification of a glutamine- and proline-rich region, the prediction of many phosphorylation and O-glycosylation sites, and the occurrence of a KKXX-like endoplasmic reticulum retention signal. Immunoprecipitation analysis with an antibody against a synthetic peptide of the nsP1a/4 sequence detected polyprotein precursors of 160, 75, and 38 to 40 kDa as well as five smaller proteins in the range of 21 to 27 kDa.

Expression of the complete ORF2 of human astrovirus serotype 1 (HAstV-1) in the baculovirus system led to the formation of virus-like particles (VLPs) of around 38 nm. The same kind of VLPs were also obtained either with the expression of a truncated form of ORF2 lacking the first 70 amino acids (aa), or with the same truncated form in which those 70 aa were replaced by the green fluorescent protein. All three kinds of VLPs were equally recognized by an anti-HAstV-1 polyclonal antibody and by two monoclonal antibodies (MAbs; 8E7 and 5B7), indicating a nonessential role of those amino acids neither in the capsid assembly nor in the antigen structure.

Virus-like particles (VLPs) with the full-length VP2 and VP6 rotavirus capsid proteins, produced in the baculovirus expression system, have been evaluated as surrogates of human rotavirus in different environmental scenarios. Green fluorescent protein-labeled VLPs (GFP-VLPs) and particles enclosing a heterologous RNA (pseudoviruses), whose stability may be monitored by flow cytometry and antigen capture reverse transcription-PCR, respectively, were used. After 1 month in seawater at 20 degrees C, no significant differences were observed between the behaviors of GFP-VLPs and of infectious rotavirus, whereas pseudovirus particles showed a higher decay rate.
