Influence of freeze-drying and fresh cooking on starch morphology and physicochemical and thermal properties of various tropical tubers.

Flours and starches extracted from the tropical tubers underwent freeze-drying and cooking in comparison with fresh cooking. Freeze-dried and cooked starch (FDS) granules were found to have different shapes and collapsed arrangement whereas freshly cooked starch (FCS) granules had the least varied structures. The freeze-dried flours had larger structures compared to freshly cooked flours.

Preliminary evaluation of and antioxidative and antitumor activities of flavonoid extract of leaves in Ehrlich's lymphoma and Dalton's lymphoma ascites model.

Aims: In the present study, the flavonoid fraction of Tabernaemontana divaricata flavonoid fraction(TdFf) leaves was investigated for its in vitro and in vivo antioxidative and antitumor activity.

Subjects And Methods: The flavonoid fraction of ethyl acetate extract was assessed for their in vitro antioxidant activity by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2'-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS), superoxide radicals, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), hydrogen peroxide, hydroxyl radicals and nitric oxide and in vivo antioxidative activity by enzymic and nonenzymic antioxidants in the liver of intraperitoneally implanted Ehrlich's lymphoma (EAC) and Dalton's lymphoma ascites (DLAs) model. The in vitro cytotoxicity was assessed using trypan blue exclusion assay and in vivo antitumor activity was assessed by screening the ILS, serum liver marker enzymes and histopathology of the liver.

Identification of glaucomatous optic nerve head changes in Indian donor eyes without clinical history.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop methods to identify glaucoma by examining the optic nerve head (ONH) of donor's eyes when information on the preexisting ocular disease is unavailable.

Materials And Methods: The ONH of the donor's eyes was evaluated under a stereomicroscope for the cup-disc ratio (CDR) and focal retinal rim thinning. The vertical diameter of the cup and disc was also measured using a precalibrated eyepiece micrometer.

Knudson's hypothesis revisited in Indian retinoblastoma patients.

Aim: Retinoblastoma (RB) is the most common primary intraocular malignancy affecting children under 5 years of age. This study aims to correlate the clinical parameters with RB1 mutation in the light of Knudson's two-hit hypothesis in Indian RB patients.

Methods: We analyzed the clinical details of 73 RB patients visiting Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai, India, between January and October 2012.

Many experiments in plant molecular biology require processing of a large number of RNA samples and in some cases large quantities are required for a single application. In turmeric, a major spice and medicinal plant, a protocol for RNA isolation is not available. The major difficulty encountered while using other popular protocols is the low yield and quality of RNA which hampers the downstream applications like qRT-PCR, cDNA synthesis and micro RNA isolation.

Cataract surgery in juvenile xanthogranuloma: case report and a brief review of literature.

There is limited literature on the management of cataracts in juvenile xanthogranuloma (JXG). A 2-month-old girl presented to us with hyphema, secondary glaucoma OU and skin nodules suggestive of JXG. She developed bilateral cataracts during her follow-up and was treated successfully with cataract surgery and aphakic rehabilitation.

A unique case of intracorneal aberrant lenticular rest.

Phakomatous chorsitomas are rare congenital tumors of lenticular anlage believed to be caused by invagination of surface ectoderm into the mesoderm. They may present as a mass lesion in the eyelid or in the orbit. We report a rare case of lenticular anlage occurring within the corneal stroma in a 6-month-old boy.

Antioxidant and cytotoxic effects of hexane extract of Morinda pubescens leaves in human liver cancer cell line.

Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant and cytotoxic effects of hexane extract of Morinda pubescens leaves and to find the primary bioactive compound responsible for antioxidant and cytotoxic activities.

Methods: The individual compounds were isolated using column chromatography and were characterized by spectroscopic techniques. The antioxidant activity was evaluated for all individual isolated compounds by DPPH method using L-Ascorbic acid as standard and cytotoxicity was assessed for the extract and the hyoscyamine by MTT assay, caspase test and RT-PCR study.
