Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to provide updated evidence for managing stage I colon cancer (CC) post-surgery, focusing on recurrence rates and risk factors.
  • Despite low recurrence risk, some guidelines suggest intensive follow-up is unnecessary, but data on actual recurrence rates is limited.
  • The findings reveal a 5% recurrence rate, primarily systemic, with significant risk factors including tumor characteristics and patient demographics, suggesting a need for improved postoperative follow-up strategies.

Background: Diverting ileostomy is a common procedure in rectal cancer surgery, but it is sometimes associated with a nonnegligible rate of complications. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the incidence and types of stoma-related complications for ileostomy creation after rectal cancer resection. The secondary aims were to report the indications, the technical details, and the efficacy of stoma care provided by ostomy nurses.

Objectives: To develop a deep-learning model for supervised classification of myocardial iron overload (MIO) from magnitude T2* multi-echo MR images.

Materials And Methods: Eight hundred twenty-three cardiac magnitude T2* multi-slice, multi-echo MR images from 496 thalassemia major patients (285 females, 57%), labeled for MIO level (normal: T2* > 20 ms, moderate: 10 ≤ T2* ≤ 20 ms, severe: T2* < 10 ms), were retrospectively studied. Two 2D convolutional neural networks (CNN) developed for multi-slice (MS-HippoNet) and single-slice (SS-HippoNet) analysis were trained using 5-fold cross-validation.

Article Synopsis
  • - Medical image classification using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) usually needs a lot of manual adjustments, but neural architecture search (NAS) can automate this process, making it more efficient.
  • - This study focuses on classifying different sub-types of cardiac amyloidosis using NAS on [18F]-Florbetaben PET cardiac images, with a significant dataset augmentation from 597 to 4048 images, resulting in 5000 evaluated architectures.
  • - The best-performing network, named NAS-Net, achieved 76.95% overall accuracy and showed impressive sensitivity and specificity rates for the AL and ATTR-CA subjects, confirming that NAS can rival traditional methods while using fewer parameters.

To date, no reports have indicated laparoscopic lymph node biopsies using Indocyanine green (ICG) in cases of lymphoproliferative disease. Preliminary data of patients undergoing fluorescence-guided laparoscopic lymph node biopsy (FGLLB) using ICG was retrospectively analysed from the multicentre registry FLABILY study. Between June 2022 and February 2024, 50 patients underwent FGLLB.

Cardiovascular disease shows, or may even be caused by, changes in metabolism. Hyperpolarized magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging is a technique that could assess the role of different aspects of metabolism in heart disease, allowing real-time metabolic flux assessment in vivo. In this review, we introduce the main hyperpolarization techniques.

(1) Background: Computed tomography (CT) plays a paramount role in the characterization and follow-up of COVID-19. Several score systems have been implemented to properly assess the lung parenchyma involved in patients suffering from SARS-CoV-2 infection, such as the visual quantitative assessment score (VQAS) and software-based quantitative assessment score (SBQAS) to help in managing patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study aims to investigate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of the VQAS and SBQAS with two different types of software based on artificial intelligence (AI) in patients affected by SARS-CoV-2.

Surviving near-lethal insults, such as sepsis, trauma, and major surgery is more common due to advances in medical care. The decline in mortality has unmasked a population of chronic critically ill patients, many with the pathological immunophenotype known as Persistent inflammation, Immunosuppression, and Catabolism Syndrome (PICS). Though initially described in adults, many critically ill children exhibit the hallmarks of PICS, including lymphopenia, hyperinflammation, and evidence of ongoing somatic protein catabolism.

A sustainable, bioinspired approach to functionalize basalt fibers with an innovative gallic acid (GA)-iron phenyl phosphonate complex (BF-GA-FeP), for the purpose of improving the flame retardancy in composite materials, is developed. BFs were at first pretreated with O, obtaining surface free hydroxyl groups that allowed the subsequent covalent immobilization of biosourced GA units on the fiber through ester linkages. Phenolic -OH groups of the GA units were then exploited for the complexation of iron phenyl phosphonate, resulting in the target-complex-coated BF fiber (BF-GA-FeP).

Radiofrequency (RF) coils for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) applications serve to generate RF fields to excite the nuclei in the sample (transmit coil) and to pick up the RF signals emitted by the nuclei (receive coil). For the purpose of optimizing the image quality, the performance of RF coils has to be maximized. In particular, the transmit coil has to provide a homogeneous RF magnetic field, while the receive coil has to provide the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).

Cultural heritage stone materials frequently experience significant discoloration induced by copper corrosion products, especially calcareous stones associated with bronze or copper statues and architectural elements. This alteration originates from the corrosion of unprotected copper, resulting in the formation of various Cu minerals and the migration of soluble ions to adjacent stone materials. Traditional cleaning methods involve mechanical, chemical, and laser techniques, which are generally time-consuming, costly, not ecological, or can possibly damage original materials.

Despite its histological resemblance to colorectal adenocarcinoma, there is little information about the molecular events involved in the pathogenesis of intestinal-type sinonasal adenocarcinoma (ITAC). The present study investigated the possible role and clinical value of microRNA (miR)-let-7a, a head and neck squamous cell carcinoma-related miR, in a well-characterized and homogeneous cohort of patients with ethmoidal ITAC associated with occupational exposure, treated by primary surgery. miR-let-7a expression levels were analyzed in 23 pairs of ethmoidal ITAC and adjacent normal formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues by reverse transcription-quantitative PCR.

In hemodynamically stable adults sustaining a splenic trauma, non-operative management (NOM) represents the standard approach even in high-severity injuries. However, knowledge, structural, and logistic limitations still reduce its wider diffusion. This study aims to identify such issues to promote the safe and effective management of these injuries.

Left Ventricle (LV) detection from Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) imaging is a fundamental step, preliminary to myocardium segmentation and characterization. This paper focuses on the application of a Visual Transformer (ViT), a novel neural network architecture, to automatically detect LV from CMR relaxometry sequences. We implemented an object detector based on the ViT model to identify LV from CMR multi-echo T2* sequences.

  • Lateral internal sphincterotomy (LIS) is the standard treatment for chronic anal fissures, but can lead to new cases of incontinence, while fissurectomy is suggested as a safer option.
  • A study analyzed 120 patients who underwent either surgery, comparing healing rates, incontinence changes, and patient satisfaction over a mean follow-up of 55 months.
  • Results indicated that LIS had a higher healing rate (97.8% vs. 75.8% for fissurectomy) and lower incidence of post-operative incontinence, and patients experienced greater satisfaction post-surgery compared to those who had fissurectomy.

In the current context of complexity between climate change, environmental sustainability, resource scarcity, and geopolitical aspects of energy resources, a polygenerative system with a circular approach is considered to generate energy (thermal, electrical, and fuel), contributing to the control of CO emissions. A plant for the multiple productions of electrical energy, thermal heat, DME, syngas, and methanol is discussed and analyzed, integrating a chemical cycle for CO/HO splitting driven using concentrated solar energy and biomethane. Two-stage chemical looping is the central part of the plant, operating with the CeO/CeO redox couple and operating at 1.
