Cisplatin is a platinum-based chemotherapy drug with antimicrobial and antitumoral activity, largely used for a long time in the treatment of several cancers, including the Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC), which is one of the most frequent neoplasms of the oral cavity. Due to its aggressiveness and metastatic invasion, OSCC is characterized by poor outcome, often related also to chemoresistance mechanisms. The intracellular enzyme paraoxonase-2 (PON2) normally acts defending cells from the damages induced by Reactive Oxygen Species.

Periodontitis affects up to 40% of adults over 60 years old and is a consequence of gingivitis. Periodontitis is characterized by a chronic inflammation, periodontal damage, and alveolar bone resorption. The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NFE2L2 or NRF2)/Kelch-like ECH-Associated Protein 1 (KEAP1) (NRF2/KEAP1) signaling pathway plays a key role in periodontitis by modulating redox balance and inflammation of the periodontium.

Article Synopsis
  • International guidelines recommend using direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) over vitamin K antagonists (VKA) and dual antithrombotic therapy (DAT) over triple antithrombotic therapy (TAT) for patients on oral anticoagulant therapy undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stents.
  • A study involving 1234 patients on oral anticoagulants assessed the outcomes of DOAC versus VKA and DAT versus TAT, focusing on net adverse clinical events (NACE) at a one-year follow-up.
  • Results showed DOAC resulted in a lower NACE rate compared to VKA (16% vs 23%), and while DAT and TAT had similar NACE rates, DAT led to

Objective: Resection of tumors of oral cavity usually causes short- or long-term sequelae such as chewing, speech and swallowing impairment. To preserve this function it is necessary to maintain the lining of the oral cavity, the mobility and sensitivity of the tongue. Reconstructive options for oral mucosal defects resulting from tumor resection included primary closure, mucosal and skin grafts, pedicle and microvascular free flaps, and dermal matrix.

Comprehensive quantification of neuronal architectures underlying anatomical brain connectivity remains challenging. We introduce a method to identify distinct axonal projection patterns from a source to a set of target regions and the count of neurons with each pattern. A source region projecting to n targets could have 2-1 theoretically possible projection types, although only a subset of these types typically exists.

Aims: The role of coronary calcification on clinical outcomes among different revascularization strategies in patients presenting with acute coronary syndromes (ACSs) has been rarely investigated. The aim of this investigation is to evaluate the role of coronary calcification, detected by coronary angiography, in the whole spectrum of patients presenting with acute ACS.

Methods And Results: The present study was a post hoc analysis of the MATRIX programme.

Background: The benefit of complete revascularization in older patients (≥75 years of age) with myocardial infarction and multivessel disease remains unclear.

Methods: In this multicenter, randomized trial, we assigned older patients with myocardial infarction and multivessel disease who were undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of the culprit lesion to receive either physiology-guided complete revascularization of nonculprit lesions or to receive no further revascularization. Functionally significant nonculprit lesions were identified either by pressure wire or angiography.

Article Synopsis
  • A recent study aimed to validate an updated risk score for predicting contrast-associated acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) as part of the MATRIX trial, which involved over 8,200 acute coronary syndrome patients.
  • The risk score categorizes patients into 4 risk levels for CA-AKI, showing a stepwise increase in incidence from low to high-risk groups, with CA-AKI occurring in 5.5% of participants.
  • The analysis showed that both the 8-component and 12-component models overestimated CA-AKI risk and that patients who developed CA-AKI had significantly higher 1-year rates of all-cause mortality and bleeding compared to those without CA-AKI

Oral lichen planus usually occurs in adults; there are no clear data regarding the incidence and the clinical features of oral lichen planus in children. This paper reports clinical findings, treatments, and outcomes of 13 Italian patients with oral lichen planus in childhood diagnosed between 2001 and 2021. The most common finding was keratotic lesions with reticular or papular/plaque-like patterns, confined to the tongue in seven patients.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma represents the most aggressive and frequent form of head and neck cancer. Due to drug resistance, the 5-year survival rate of patients with advanced disease is less than 50%. In order to identify molecular targets for effective oral cancer treatment, we focused on paraoxonase-2 enzyme.

Introduction Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS) are both characterized by non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema and severe hypoxemia that leads to a high percentage of patients suffering in-hospital mortality. Mechanistically, inhaled epoprostenol (iEPO) has shown a role in the treatment of ARDS and CARDS but little data are available directly comparing the two disease processes. Due to the lack of evidence of iEPO in ARDS and CARDS, the authors sought to compare the pulmonary effects of iEPO for mechanically ventilated patients with CARDS against a case match control of those with ARDS.

Context: Vaccination status has been shown to be linked to patient-centered outcomes in those with COVID-19. However, minimal data have explored the relationship between vaccination status and representation rates after receiving monoclonal antibodies (MABs) the Delta strain of severe acute respiratory syndrome-coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in a community setting.

Objectives: The authors sought to determine if there was a difference in patient-centered outcomes between those who were vaccinated and unvaccinated after the administration of casirivimab/imdevimab for mild-to-moderate COVID-19 during the time when the Delta strain was most prevalent.

Tumor Budding (TB) represents a single cancer cell or a small cluster of less than five cancer cells on the infiltrative tumor front. Accumulating evidence suggests TB is an independent prognostic factor in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). However, its exact role is not yet elucidated, and a standardized scoring system is still necessary.

  • The study compares transradial (TRA) and transfemoral (TFA) access methods for patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing complex procedures, analyzing data from the MATRIX-Access trial with 8404 participants.
  • Findings show that while there were no significant differences in major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) for complex PCI between TRA and TFA, TRA had better outcomes for noncomplex PCI patients, reducing the incidence of MACE and net adverse cardiovascular events (NACE).
  • Moreover, TRA consistently resulted in lower rates of serious access-site bleeding for both complex and noncomplex PCI, with a more significant risk reduction observed in patients undergoing complex procedures.
