Methods: We present two cases of patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment due to AD who were enrolled in the GRADUATE I clinical trial. They received subcutaneous gantenerumab every two weeks during the study period.

A New Easy-to-Perform Flow Cytometry Assay for Determining Bacterial- and Viral-Infection-Induced Polymorphonuclear Neutrophil and Monocyte Membrane Marker Modulation in Febrile Patients.

We developed a flow cytometry (FC) assay enabling the rapid and accurate identification of bacterial and viral infections using whole blood samples. The streamlined flow cytometry assay is designed to be user-friendly, making it accessible even for operators with limited experience in FC techniques. The key components of the assay focus on the expression levels of specific surface markers-CD64 on polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) as a marker for bacterial infection, and CD169 on monocytes (MO) for viral infection.

Impact of SARS-CoV-2 on Viral Respiratory Infections in Patients with Hematological Malignancies.

Patients with hematological malignancies (HMs) are at high risk of respiratory viral infections due to the intrinsic deterioration of the immune system and chemotherapy treatments. In the recent past, SARS-CoV-2 respiratory viral infection has been responsible for most infectious complications in HMs. We analyzed 2950 samples from 505 patients admitted to the Hematology department from 2019 to 2023.

Implementation of the WHO Standards to assess quality of paediatric care at the facility level using service users' perspective as source of data: a multicentre quality improvement study in Italy.

Objectives: There is little experience in the use of the WHO Standards for improving the quality of care (QOC) for children at the facility level. We describe the use of 75 WHO Standard based Quality Measures to assess paediatric QOC, using service users as a source of data, in Italy.

Study Design: In a cross-sectional study including 12 hospitals, parents/caregivers of admitted children completed a validated questionnaire including 75 Quality Measures: 40 pertinent to the domain of experience of care; 25 to physical/structural resources; 10 to COVID-19 reorganisational changes.

Methods: This cross-sectional study in a Memory Center enrolled 98 patients along the AD continuum or affected by other neurodegenerative disorders, stratified by CSF A/T status and clinical syndrome. Plasma pTau-217, pTau-181, and Aβ42/Aβ40 were measured using Lumipulse.

This study explores the use of individual alpha frequency (IAF) derived from EEG as a diagnostic and prognostic tool in cognitively impaired patients.

A 67-Year-Old Man with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL) on Maintenance Therapy with Ibrutinib with Persistent SARS-CoV-2 Infection Unresponsive to Antiviral Treatments.

BACKGROUND SARS-CoV-2 infection can persist in immunocompromised patients with hematological malignancies, despite antiviral treatment. This report is of a 67-year-old man with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), secondary hypogammaglobulinemia, and thrombocytopenia on maintenance therapy with ibrutinib, with persistent SARS-CoV-2 infection unresponsive to antiviral treatment, including remdesivir, nirmatrelvir/ritonavir (Paxlovid), and tixagevimab/cilgavimab (Evusheld). CASE REPORT The patient was admitted to our hospital 3 times.

The prevention of congenital toxoplasmosis using a combination of Spiramycin and Cotrimoxazole: The long-time experience of a tertiary referral centre.

Background: Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii and is responsible for gestational and congenital infections worldwide. The current standard therapy is based on the administration of Spiramycin to prevent trans-placental transmission. Other therapies are being studied to reduce the rates of foetal transmission and symptomatic congenital infection.

We compared the need of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), invasive ventilation, and other respiratory support, viral etiologies, clinical presentations, imaging, and laboratory results in the precovid (2018-2019) and covid (2020-2022) period.

Background And Objectives: The 3 clinical presentations of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) reflect heterogenous neuropathology, which is difficult to be recognized in vivo. Resting-state (RS) EEG is promising for the investigation of brain electrical substrates in neurodegenerative conditions. Performance of a Novel Real-Time PCR-Based Assay for Rapid Monkeypox Virus Detection in Human Samples.

The ongoing epidemic of mpox, namely human monkeypox virus (MPXV) infection, requires rapid and reliable laboratory diagnosis. We report on the QIAstat-Dx viral vesicular panel PCR assay that allows the detection of (within 75 min) six vesicular disease-causing viruses, including MPXV. We analyzed 168 clinical samples, known to be positive (51 samples) or negative (117 samples) for MPXV clade II, obtained from patients at their mpox diagnosis or follow-up.

Potential Cardiologic Protective Effects of Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors in Patients With Mild to Moderate Dementia.

In patients with mild to moderate dementia, acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChE-I) are used to improve cognitive functions, but bradycardia, conduction abnormalities, and hypotension are possible side effects because of the peripheral muscarinic M2 receptor stimulation. This study aimed to evaluate the main cardiologic clinical outcomes in patients with dementia who are on AChE-I. In this retrospective, monocentric, observational cohort study, 2 groups were considered: (1) patients with dementia because of the typical and atypical forms of Alzheimer disease treated with AChE-I and (2) cognitively unimpaired, matched control group.

Molecular Connections between DNA Replication and Cell Death in β-Amyloid-Treated Neurons.

Background: Ectopic cell cycle reactivation in neurons is associated with neuronal death in Alzheimer's disease. In cultured rodent neurons, synthetic β-amyloid (Aβ) reproduces the neuronal cell cycle re-entry observed in the Alzheimer's brain, and blockade of the cycle prevents Aβ-induced neurodegeneration. DNA polymerase-β, whose expression is induced by Aβ, is responsible for the DNA replication process that ultimately leads to neuronal death, but the molecular mechanism(s) linking DNA replication to neuronal apoptosis are presently unknown.
