Article Synopsis
  • Soil desertification negatively affects social, economic, and environmental aspects globally, particularly in Brazilian drylands where mycorrhizal diversity is underexplored.
  • The study hypothesized that overgrazing alters the structure of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) communities compared to native areas, and that grazing exclusion can help restore these communities.
  • Results indicated that restored soils had higher organic matter and AMF diversity, while degraded soils showed poorer conditions, highlighting long-term grazing exclusion as a viable strategy for AMF diversity restoration in semiarid regions.

CD8+ T lymphocytes are one of the main effector cells of the immune system, they protect the organism against intracellular threats such as viruses and bacteria, as well as neoplasms. It is currently well established that CD8+ T cells have distinct immune responses, given by their phenotypes Tc1, Tc2, Tc17, and TcReg. The cellular plasticity of such phenotypes depends on the presence of different combinations of cytokines in the extracellular medium.

Article Synopsis
  • ICEs (integrative and conjugative elements) are mobile genetic elements in bacteria that can be transferred between cells, influencing gene transmission and bacterial traits.
  • In a study of 300 genomes of phytopathogenic bacteria, 78 ICEs were identified, including 31 novel elements, which carry numerous accessory genes that may enhance virulence and survival.
  • The findings suggest that ICEs significantly impact the pathogenicity and gene distribution among these bacteria, highlighting their role in infection processes in plants.

Helminths possibly down-modulate immune responses to airborne allergens through the induction of a regulatory network. The identification of helminths bioactive molecules is highly desirable, given their immunomodulatory potential which could be used in immunotherapies for allergy and autoimmune diseases. To investigate the immunoregulatory potential of the adult Toxocara canis crude extract and ten protein fractions of its extract, human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from 10 allergic and 9 non-allergic individuals were cultivated, in vitro, in the presence or absence of these antigens, and their supernatants were evaluated for cytokine production (TGF-β, IL-10, IL-12, TNF-α, IL-6, IL-5, IL13, and IL-17).
