Background: Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is the most common form of preinvasive breast cancer, with 5-10% of cases progressing into invasive disease. Herein, we investigated the association between HER2-low and clinico-pathological characteristics in DCIS and subsequent ipsilateral loco-regional relapse (LRR).
Materials And Methods: We accessed our prospectively maintained institutional database.
Background: Management of lymphoid malignancies requires substantial health system resources. Total national health expenditure might influence population-based lymphoid malignancy survival. We studied the long-term survival of patients with 12 lymphoid malignancy types and examined whether different levels of national health expenditure might explain differences in lymphoid malignancy prognosis between European countries and regions.

Methods: We analysed 4,602 lung cancer cases diagnosed in 2010-2013, followed-up to 2019 in five countries. Multivariable logistic regression was used to calculate the Odds Ratio (OR) of surgery for stages I-II LC or chemo- or radiotherapy for stages III-IV LC.
Objectives: Standard care for cutaneous melanoma includes an accurate pathology report (PR) and sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for staging clinically node-negative >1 mm melanomas. We aimed to investigate the frequency of these indicators across European countries, also assessing consequences for survival. Methods: We analyzed 4245 melanoma cases diagnosed in six European countries in 2009−2013.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFTyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) have been improving the prognosis of patients with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), but there are still large differences in survival among European countries. This raises questions on the added value of results from population-based studies, which use real-world data, compared to results of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving patients with CML. There are also questions about the extent of the findings on RCTs effectiveness for patients in the general population.

However, technological advances in the detection of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) have made new options available for diagnosis, classification, biological knowledge, and treatment selection. Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease and ctDNA can accurately reflect this heterogeneity, allowing us to detect, monitor, and understand the evolution of the disease.

In this study we analyzed patients over 50 years with a diagnosis of early BC, candidate for Hypo-RT after conservative surgery. Acute and late skin toxicities were evaluated in accordance with the RTOG scale.

The aim of this study was to analyze the risk of cancer in patients with MS treated with azathioprine (AZA) and the influence of sequential DMTs on the risk.
Method: We retrospectively enrolled a cohort of AZA-treated MS patients followed in two Italian centers from 1987 to 2019.
Background: The management regarding metastatic colorectal cancer throughout Europe is not well known.
Aims: To draw a European comparison of the management and prognosis of metastatic colorectal cancers.
Methods: Factors associated with chemotherapy administration were identified through logistic regressions.
Pathology reports represent a primary source of information for cancer registries. Hospitals routinely process high volumes of free-text reports, a valuable source of information regarding cancer diagnosis for improving clinical care and supporting research. Information extraction and coding of textual unstructured data is typically a manual, labour-intensive process.

This study analyzed clinicopathologic features and sentinel node status as potential prognostic factors in patients with AMTs.
Patients And Methods: Clinicopathologic and follow-up data of 238 children, adolescents, and adults with histologically proved AMTs consecutively treated at 12 European centers from 2000 through 2010 were retrieved from prospectively maintained databases.
Purpose: Endocrine therapy (ET) is the mainstream adjuvant treatment for ER-positive breast cancer (BC). We analysed 9293 ER-positive BC patients diagnosed in nine European countries in 2009-2013 to investigate how comorbidities at diagnosis, age, stage and subtype affected ET use over time, and relapse.
Methods: Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of receiving ET were estimated according to Charlson comorbidity, age, stage and subtype using logistic regression.
Imatinib, the first tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), improves overall survival (OS), but the introduction of newer TKIs requires the definition of the optimal first-line TKI for newly diagnosed Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph+) chronic-phase (CP) CML. This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) compares the efficacy and safety of imatinib vs second-generation (dasatinib, nilotinib, bosutinib) and third-generation TKIs (ponatinib) in adults with newly diagnosed Ph+ CP CML, concentrating on OS, progression-free survival (PFS), and hematological and nonhematological adverse events. The quality of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) method.

Aim: To assess the impact of age, comorbidities and endocrine therapy (ET) in older breast cancer (BC) patients treated with hypofractionated radiotherapy (Hypo-RT).
Methods: From June 2009 to December 2017, we enrolled in this study 735 ER-positive BC patients (stage pT1-T2, pNx-1, M0 and age ≥ 65 years) receiving hypo-RT and followed them until September 2019. Baseline comorbidities included in the hypertension-augmented Charlson Comorbidity Index were retrospectively retrieved.
Introduction: For stage III colon cancer (CC), surgery followed by chemotherapy is the main curative approach, although optimum times between diagnosis and surgery, and surgery and chemotherapy, have not been established.
Materials And Methods: We analysed a population-based sample of 1912 stage III CC cases diagnosed in eight European countries in 2009-2013 aiming to estimate: (i) odds of receiving postoperative chemotherapy, overall and within eight weeks of surgery; (ii) risks of death/relapse, according to treatment, Charlson Comorbidity Index, time from diagnosis to surgery for emergency and elective cases, and time from surgery to chemotherapy; and (iii) time-trends in chemotherapy use.
Results: Overall, 97% of cases received surgery and 65% postoperative chemotherapy, with 71% of these receiving chemotherapy within eight weeks of surgery.
Objective: To evaluate the frequency of neoadjuvant therapy (NT) in women with stage I-III breast cancer in Italy and whether it is influenced by biological characteristics, screening history, and geographic area.
Methods: Data from the High Resolution Study conducted in 7 Italian cancer registries were used; they are a representative sample of incident cancers in the study period (2009-2013). Included were 3546 women aged <85 years (groups <50, 50-69, 70-64, and 75+) with stage I-III breast cancer at diagnosis who underwent surgery.
To assess the efficacy, and the acute and late toxicity of hypofractionated radiotherapy (Hypo-RT), and the impact of age and comorbidities on disease progression and death in elderly breast cancer (BC) patients. Women aged ≥65 years who received Hypo-RT (42.4 Gy in 16 fractions, plus a boost for high-risk patients) were considered for the present analysis.

Our aim was to provide further support for treatment de-escalation or enrollment of such patients in active surveillance trials.
Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data on patients with conservatively treated primary DCIS subsequently diagnosed with ipsilateral invasive breast cancer (IBC) at 2 comprehensive breast cancer centers.
Background: Primary tumor characteristics, which are readily available to all clinicians, may aid in selecting the optimal adjuvant therapy for patients with breast cancer (BC). Herein, we investigated the relationship between tumor size, hormone receptor and HER2 status, Ki67 and age with axillary lymph node metastases (ALNM) in early-BC patients.
Methods: We analyzed data on consecutive 2600 early-BC cases collected in the registry of Fondazione IRCC Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milano, Italy.
Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype with limited therapeutic options. New opportunities are emerging from current comprehensive characterization of tumor immune infiltration and fitness. Therefore, effectiveness of current chemotherapies and novel immunotherapies are partially dictated by host inflammatory and immune profiles.
