Background: Insecticide treated nets (ITNs) are the most important malaria prevention tool in Africa but the rise of pyrethroid resistance in mosquitoes is likely impeding control. WHO has recommended a novel pyrethroid-pyrrole ITN following evidence of epidemiological benefit in two cluster-randomised, controlled trials (CRTs). It remains unclear how effective more costly pyrethroid-pyrrole ITNs are compared with other tools, or whether they should be deployed when budgets are limited.

Introduction: Updated data on the seroprevalences of hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV, HCV) are required to enable the adaptation of control strategies. In this study, we aimed to: (i) estimate the seroprevalences of HBsAg carriers and HCV exposure in the general population, and (ii) determine the impact of vaccination on HBV circulation since its introduction in 2006 in the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI).

Methodology: From October 2020 to October 2022, a mass screening campaign was conducted in 10 cities across Burkina Faso.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed the prevalence of co-infections with parasites in newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) patients compared to non-TB participants in Bobo-Dioulasso from 2019 to 2021, finding a higher frequency of parasitic infections in the TB group (69.5% vs. 55.7%).
  • Protozoal infections, especially by Entamoeba spp. and Cryptosporidium spp., were significantly more prevalent in TB+ patients, indicating a strong link between TB and certain types of parasites.
  • Factors such as illiteracy, smoking, and inadequate hygiene practices (like not washing hands after defecation) were identified as potential contributors to parasite infections, suggesting a need for improved health

The case presents a traumatic ventricular perforation of a girl, accidentally felt on a sharp instrument. The uniqueness of the case presented is due to the very high infrequency of injuries with this type of sharp object. The 7-year-old girl was transported to the hospital after accidentally falling on a sharp instrument.

Drug-resistant (DR) tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health concern globally, complicating TB control and management efforts. West Africa has historically faced difficulty in combating DR-TB due to limited diagnostic skills, insufficient access to excellent healthcare, and ineffective healthcare systems. This has aided in the emergence and dissemination of DR complex (MTBC) strains in the region.

Article Synopsis
  • WEEE, or waste electrical and electronic equipment, is being considered "urban mines" due to the valuable minerals they contain, but current classification methods focus mostly on physical attributes rather than economic potential.
  • The study introduces a new classification model specifically for low-income countries, identifying WEEE types generated in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, using analytical methods like PCA and K-means.
  • The research categorizes WEEE into three groups—batteries, valuable and precious metal-containing equipment, and CRT-TV waste—highlighting that the second group has the most potential for economic recovery, benefiting both investors and decision-makers in enhancing WEEE valorization strategies.

Aqueous extracts of calyx from (HS) (roselle) are highly appreciated for their nutritional and therapeutic effects, especially as anti-hypertensive substances. This study aimed to evaluate their anti-hypertensive potential through an in vitro inhibition assay of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and hypertension precursor enzymes and to assess the in vivo diuretic activity of HS. Results showed that HS extract inhibited enzymes belonging to several classes, such as α-amylase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, xanthine oxidase, lipoxygenase, and angiotensin-converting enzyme.

Article Synopsis
  • Cervical spondyloptosis is a rare but serious spine condition, often lacking clear management guidelines, especially for delayed cases.
  • A 28-year-old patient experienced quadriplegia due to trauma and underwent a surgical intervention 45 days later, which included both anterior and posterior approaches, leading to significant neurological recovery.
  • Early intervention is crucial for better outcomes, but in delayed instances, combining both surgical techniques can successfully decompress and stabilize the spine, resulting in favorable postoperative results.

Article Synopsis
  • Common severe back pain from disc herniation in children under 18 is rare and differs from adult cases, requiring specific treatment approaches.
  • Three cases of lumbar disc herniation were presented in patients aged 14 and 17, diagnosed through CT and MRI scans, leading to targeted treatments.
  • Effective interventions included percutaneous discolysis for two patients with severe pain and epidural corticosteroid infiltration for one case, highlighting the need for prioritized invasive treatments in pediatric patients.

The foramen magnum approach is always challenging because of the relationships between vital neurovascular structures in this area. Several approaches have been described, among them, the far lateral approach remains a cornerstone for the resection of anterior or anterolateral processes of the foramen magnum. This approach displays two main steps: the first is cervical, whereas the second is cranial.

Background: Chromosomal inversion polymorphisms have been associated with adaptive behavioral, physiological, morphological and life history traits in the two main Afrotropical malaria vectors, Anopheles coluzzii and Anopheles gambiae. The understanding of the adaptive value of chromosomal inversion systems is constrained by the feasibility of cytological karyotyping. In recent years in silico and molecular approaches have been developed for the genotyping of most widespread inversions (2La, 2Rb and 2Rc).

Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is a marker of wild-type hepatitis B virus replication. In resource-limited countries where access to enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) remains a challenge, rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) constitute a good alternative. The HBeAg status is employed to evaluate eligibility for antiviral therapy and to prevent the transmission of hepatitis B from mother to child (PMTCT).

Mosquito surveillance is essential to successfully control and eliminate mosquito-borne diseases. Yet, it is often done by numerous organizations with little collaboration, incomplete understanding of existing gaps, and limited long-term vision. There is a clear disconnect between entomological and epidemiological indices, with entomological data informing control efforts inadequately.

Insecticide resistance is a growing problem that risks harming the progress made by vector control tools in reducing the malaria burden globally. New methods for quantifying the extent of resistance in wild populations are urgently needed to guide deployment of interventions to improve disease control. Intensity bioassays measure mosquito mortality at a range of insecticide doses and characterise phenotypic resistance in regions where resistance is already detected.

Understanding the types of food systems interventions that foster women's empowerment and the types of women that are able to benefit from different interventions is important for development policy. SELEVER was a gender- and nutrition-sensitive poultry production intervention implemented in western Burkina Faso from 2017 to 2020 that aimed to empower women. We evaluated SELEVER using a mixed-methods cluster-randomized controlled trial, which included survey data from 1763 households at baseline and endline and a sub-sample for two interim lean season surveys.

In this review paper, we explore how on-the-ground Early Childhood Development (ECD) innovators are using monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems to guide the design and implementation of ECD programs, as well as how MEL systems can influence policy and support the achievement of impact at scale. We reflect on articles in the series "." The 31 contributions to the series reflect the breadth and depth of complexity that characterizes ECD, including global geographic spread, with studies from Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean.

Experimental hut trials (EHTs) are used to evaluate indoor vector control interventions against malaria vectors in a controlled setting. The level of variability present in the assay will influence whether a given study is well powered to answer the research question being considered. We utilised disaggregated data from 15 previous EHTs to gain insight into the behaviour typically observed.

Extracts from Hibiscus sabdariffa L. (roselle) have been used traditionally as a food, in herbal medicine, in hot and cold beverages, as flavouring or coloring agent in the food industry. In vitro and in vivo studies and trials provide evidence, but roselle is poorly characterised phytochemically due to the extraction processes.
