Background: Several observational studies have described an inverse association between cancer diagnosis and subsequent dementia risk. Multiple biologic mechanisms and potential biases have been proposed in attempts to explain this association. Introduction: In the randomized controlled trial in patients with SCLC comparing standard prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) with hippocampal avoidance PCI (HA-PCI), we did not observe beneficial effects of HA-PCI on tested cognition.
