Article Synopsis
  • Shoulder arthroplasty is a significant surgery for treating severe shoulder arthritis, and understanding patients' decision-making can aid in their support during the process.
  • A study involved 12 participants awaiting the surgery, whose interviews revealed motivations for surgery mainly centered around pain relief and regaining independence.
  • Trust in the surgeon and desire for optimized recovery were key factors influencing participants’ decisions, with younger patients focusing on work and activities while older ones concentrated on improving their quality of life.

Article Synopsis
  • A 44-year-old woman experienced abdominal pain, fever, and gastrointestinal symptoms due to a large mesenteric cyst, which was confirmed via CT scan and initially treated conservatively with fluids and antibiotics, leading to symptom resolution.
  • The patient later underwent a planned elective surgery for cyst removal nine months after her initial presentation, demonstrating that conservative management can be a safer approach than immediate surgery in non-obstructive cases.

Objective: Poor sleep quality impairs immune responses and pain tolerance, both key to recovery from acute illness. Hospitalised children and their co-sleeping parents also risk emotional lability and impaired coping skills when sleep-deprived. We aimed to study the experiences of children and parents during hospital admissions.

Osteogenic behaviour of osteoblasts from trabecular, cortical and subchondral bone were examined to determine any bone type-selective differences in samples from both osteoarthritic (OA) and osteoporotic (OP) patients. Cell growth, differentiation; alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) mRNA and activity, Runt-related transcription factor-2 (RUNX2), SP7-transcription factor (SP7), bone sialoprotein-II (BSP-II), osteocalcin/bone gamma-carboxyglutamate (BGLAP), osteoprotegerin (OPG, TNFRSF11B), receptor activator of nuclear factor-κβ ligand (RANKL, TNFSF11) mRNA levels and proangiogenic vascular endothelial growth factor-A (VEGF-A) mRNA and protein release were assessed in osteoblasts from paired humeral head samples from age-matched, human OA/OP (n = 5/4) patients. Initial outgrowth and increase in cell number were significantly faster (p < 0.

Palladium-catalysed dearomatisation reactions allow access to a previously unknown class of indoloindole heterocycle: 5,10b-dihydroindolo[2,3-b]indoles. The highly reactive nature of these compounds is demonstrated by their facile reactions with water and with hydride, alkyl, aryl and allyl-based organometallic nucleophiles.

Despite their intrinsic instability, 4a-alkyl-4aH-carbazoles can be generated by a catalytic dearomatisation process; their reactivity is demonstrated by facile dealkylation and highly unusual cyclodimerisation processes.

An MR scan was performed on all patients who presented to our hospital with a clinical diagnosis of a fracture of the proximal femur, but who had no abnormality on plain radiographs. This was a prospective study of 102 consecutive patients over a ten-year period. There were 98 patients who fulfilled our inclusion criteria, of whom 75 were scanned within 48 hours of admission, with an overall mean time between admission and scanning of 2.

Replacement of the shoulder in juvenile idiopathic arthritis is not often performed and there have been no published series to date. We present nine glenohumeral hemiarthroplasties in eight patients with systemic or polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis. The mean follow-up was six years (59 to 89 months).

Background: The radial artery (RA) is increasingly being used as a conduit for coronary artery bypass grafting. Previous studies have demonstrated that there is no significant deterioration in hand function in the long term. The aim of this study was to assess whether removal of the RA caused any alteration in the function or power of the hand 5 days postoperatively that would affect the patient's ability for self care on returning home.

A 76-year-old man presented with gait disturbances, mental deterioration and urinary incontinence. CT and MRI suggested a normal pressure hydrocephalus. Because of a raised protein content of CSF, a spinal MRI was performed and revealed a lumbar neurinoma.

A 24 year-old patient presented with chronic intracranial hypertension, palsy of both abducens nerves and upward gaze, and right hypoesthesia. CT scan and MRI showed a left thalamic tumor infiltrating the left cerebral peduncle. A stereotactic biopsy revealed a germ cell tumor.

A retrospective study was done on the effects of a change in the design of ankle-foot orthoses used in the treatment of 29 hemiplegic children. Nine of 13 children treated with plantarflexed ankle-foot orthoses required surgery, compared with only one of 16 with dorsiflexed ankle-foot orthoses. This difference is highly significant.

Nine diabetic and 7 nondiabetic (post-trauma) patients 24 to 63 years of age (mean, 49) were scanned following amputation below the knee, which was bilateral in 4. A three-phase scanning technique (flow, blood pool, and delayed equilibrium images) was employed, using Tc-99m-etidronate. Duration of the arterial and capillary phases was estimated during flow.

A new technique for the study of cardiac hemodynamics is described which utilizes single-breath inhalation of C15O2 (T 1/2 = 124 sec.) and the recording of activity vs. time curves with scintillation counters placed externally over the left ventricle and right lung.
