Association of high mortality with extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) positive cultures in community acquired infections.

Purpose: Infections due to multidrug resistant organisms have become a serious health concern worldwide. The present study was conducted to investigate the spectrum of microbial resistance pattern in the community and their effects on mortality.

Methods: A retrospective review and analysis of prospectively collected data was done of all patients admitted with diagnosis of sepsis in two tertiary care ICU's for a period of two years.

Noninvasive ventilation: Are we overdoing it?

Background: Use of noninvasive ventilation (NIV) outside guideline recommendations is common. We audited use of NIV in our tertiary care critical care unit (CCU) to evaluate appropriateness of use and patient outcomes when used outside level I recommendations.

Materials And Methods: Prospective observational study of all patients requiring NIV.

Determination of drug susceptibility patterns and genotypes of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates from Kanpur district, North India.

Background And Objectives: Molecular typing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolates has greatly facilitated the understanding of tuberculosis epidemiology. This study was done to characterize prevalent M. tuberculosis genotypes in a defined area of Kanpur district, North India by spoligotyping and IS6110-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP) and to correlate the genotypes identified with their drug susceptibility patterns.
