National Academy of Burns India (NABI) online tutorials: Pursuit of excellence in burns education.

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic led to a sudden halt in the academic activities of many medical professionals including burns and plastic surgery. Worldwide, this led to many societies switching over to various virtual platforms like Google Meet and Zoom for teaching and training. In India, as the other plastic surgery societies started their educational webinars, the National Academy of Burns India (NABI) also geared up for its web journey for imparting burn education to doctors and the general population.

Type 2 abomasal ulceration in cattle and buffalo: energy and lipid metabolic status, clinico-biochemical parameters, treatment, and prognostic indicators.

Twenty nine animals (22 cattle and 7 buffaloes) having type 2 abomasal ulcer (AU2) were studied in this prospective investigation, along with a control group (n = 20). Signalment, history, clinical signs, and laboratory alterations were determined. Blood, rumen fluid, abomasal fluid, and fecal samples were collected at the time of presentation.

A statistical analysis of incidence, etiology, and management of palatal fistula.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively review the incidence, profile, and the management of palatal fistula occurring in patients operated for cleft palate in our institute.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on all cleft palatal fistula patients who presented during the period from August 2007 to October 2017, to classify their site, age of presentation, surgery performed, and outcome. A record of the type of cleft palate and previous palatoplasty was also obtained.

Clinical and hematobiochemical response in canine monocytic ehrlichiosis seropositive dogs of Punjab.

Aim: As in India especially, the Punjab state sero-prevalence and distribution of ehrlichiosis in relation to clinico-hematobiochemical response remains largely unexplored. Thus, this study was designed to determine the prevalence of vector (tick)-borne tropical canine pancytopenia caused by through enzyme labeled ImmunoComb (IC) assay in dogs from in and around Ludhiana, Punjab. Correlation of prevalence was made with various clinico-hematobiochemical parameters.

Diagnostic tools in maxillofacial fractures: Is there really a need of three-dimensional computed tomography?

Introduction: Because of its functional and cosmetic importance, facial injuries, especially bony fractures are clinically very significant. Missed and maltreated fractures might result in malocclusion and disfigurement of the face, thus making accurate diagnosis of the fracture very essential. In earlier times, conventional radiography along with clinical examination played a major role in diagnosis of maxillofacial fractures.

Isolation and phylogenetic characterization of Canine distemper virus from India.

Canine distemper (CD), caused by canine distemper virus (CDV) is a highly contagious disease that infects a variety of carnivores. Sequence analysis of CDVs from different geographical areas has shown a lot of variation in the genome of the virus especially in haemagglutinin gene which might be one of the causes of vaccine failure. In this study, we isolated the virus (place: Ludhiana, Punjab; year: 2014) and further cloned, sequenced and analyzed partial haemagglutinin (H) gene and full length genes for fusion protein (F), phosphoprotein (P) and matrix protein (M) from an Indian wild-type CDV.

Sub mucous cleft palate with fenestration.

Congenital fenestration in sub mucous cleft palate is not a common identity. This patient is a 16-year-old female who presented with nasal speech. On examination, she had associated microform cleft lip with nasal deformity.

A retrospective audit of hundred patients of orbitozygomatic fractures with brain injury.

Background: Orbitozygomatic fracture that most commonly accompanies craniofacial injury is a challenge for medical science to reduce complications and to attain aesthetically satisfying results.

Objective: To summarize our experiences with the optimum management of orbito-zygomatic fractures.

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study was aimed at investigating indications and surgical approaches for orbitozygomatic fractures with clinical follow-up, particularly with regard to postoperative complications.

Clinico Hemato Biochemical Findings, Clinical Management, and Production Performance of Bovines with Late Pregnancy Indigestion (Type IV Vagal Indigestion).

This prospective study was conducted on 15 animals (eight buffaloes and seven cows), diagnosed with late pregnancy indigestion. Ten buffaloes and 10 cows served as the control group. The animals were in advanced pregnancy and had partial or complete anorexia, reduced water intake, loss of defecation or scanty faecal output, and mild to moderate dehydration.

Demographic profile of hand injuries in an industrial town of north India: a review of 436 patients.

There are not many injuries that rival the injured hand in complexity. A better understanding of biologic, behavioral, and socioeconomic risk factors potentially associated with hand injuries can help identify those individuals most at risk and define potential preventative measures to help reduce the incidence. We present a prospective study of 436 consecutive patients of hand and forearm injury treated over a period of 2 years.

Retrospective study of clinical and hematological aspects associated with dogs naturally infected by Hepatozoon canis in Ludhiana, Punjab, India.

Objective: To evaluate clinical and hematological aspects of dogs naturally infected with Hepatozoon canis (H. canis) presented at the Small Animal Clinics of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana.

Methods: Blood films of 34 naturally infected dogs were examined for haematological alterations and parasitaemia.

Palatoplasty in a patient with Seckel syndrome.

We report a rare case of a patient of Seckel syndrome having cleft palate born to nonconsanguineous married parents. This 8-year-old male child underwent successful palatoplasty under general anesthesia. Till date there are approximately 60 cases of Seckel syndrome reported in the literature.

Incisor tooth in the nose: anecdotal sequel to dog bite in a 3-year-old child.

A 3-year-old male child presented to the casualty with history of unprovoked dog bite over the right lateral wall of nose. He was managed conservatively with antirabies prophylaxis and dressings. He presented after 3 months with a healed wound and the right upper central incisor projecting into the nostril.

Role of negative pressure wound therapy in healing of diabetic foot ulcers.

Introduction: Foot disorders such as ulceration, infection and gangrene are the most common, complex and costly sequelae of diabetes mellitus.[1-3] Even for the most superficial wounds, treatment is often difficult with poor healing responses and high rates of complications. The purpose of this study is to compare the rate of ulcer healing with the negative pressure dressing technique to conventional moist dressings in the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers.

Supernumerary nostril: A rare congenital anomaly.

We report the 23(rd) case of the world of one of the rare congenital anomalies, supernumerary nostril. The disease has a variable presentation and more than half of the reported cases are from Asian continent. This patient had a supernumerary nostril in the form of a accessory blind tract above the left ala.

A clinico-epidemiologic study of 892 patients with burn injuries at a tertiary care hospital in Punjab, India.

Aim: To analyze the causes, demographic and socio-cultural aspects, and the magnitude of burn injuries prospectively and to evaluate the outcome of treatment of patients admitted to burns ICU of tertiary care hospital.

Materials And Methods: A total of 892 burn patients admitted over a period of 6 years from January 2002 to December 2007 at tertiary care hospital in Punjab, India, were analyzed.

Results: 54% patients were males.

Pre-expanded epigastric flap cover for ventral hernia following fungal necrotizing fascitis of caesarian section wound: An unusual complication.

Introduction: Reconstruction of anterior abdominal wall after necrotizing abdominal wall infections is a challenge.

Material And Methods: A 35-year-old lady presented with 20 × 18 cm sized defect of the anterior abdominal wall following fungal necrotizing fascitis. The defect was covered by an overlay prolene mesh and the soft tissue deficit was corrected by pre-expanded epigastric flap based on the superior epigastric artery.

Comparative evaluation of surface swab and quantitative full thickness wound biopsy culture in burn patients.

A total of 100 cases of burn were examined and screened bacteriologically for evidence of infection by surface swab culture, quantitative full thickness punch biopsy culture and blood culture. Gram negative organisms predominates the gram positive ones. Surface swab was found to correlate well with the biopsy as far the identification of causative organism is concerned.
