Eosinophils are often encountered in the stroma and peritumoral microenvironment of squamous cell carcinomas. Because eosinophils are readily identified on routine hematoxylin and eosin stained sections, researchers have explored multiple ways in which identifying the extent of eosinophil infiltration on routine biopsy and excisional specimens might provide diagnostic and prognostic information. We review the literature on this evolving topic.

Biphenotypic sinonasal sarcoma (BSNS) is a rare low-grade malignancy occurring in the sinonasal tract that is characterized by dual neural and myogenic differentiation. Rearrangements involving the PAX3 gene, usually with MAML3, are a hallmark of this tumor type and their identification are useful for diagnosis. Rarely, a MAML3 rearrangement without associated PAX3 rearrangement has been described.

The limited clinical success of anti-HGF/MET drugs can be attributed to the lack of predictive biomarkers that adequately select patients for treatment. We demonstrate here that quantitative digital imaging of formalin fixed paraffin embedded tissues stained by immunohistochemistry can be used to measure signals from weakly staining antibodies and provides new opportunities to develop assays for detection of MET receptor activity. To establish a biomarker panel of MET activation, we employed seven antibodies measuring protein expression in the HGF/MET pathway in 20 cases and up to 80 cores from 18 human cancer types.

Computerized evaluation of histological preparations of prostate tissues involves identification of tissue components such as stroma (ST), benign/normal epithelium (BN) and prostate cancer (PCa). Image classification approaches have been developed to identify and classify glandular regions in digital images of prostate tissues; however their success has been limited by difficulties in cellular segmentation and tissue heterogeneity. We hypothesized that utilizing image pixels to generate intensity histograms of hematoxylin (H) and eosin (E) stains deconvoluted from H&E images numerically captures the architectural difference between glands and stroma.

Papillary thyroid cancer favors lymphatic spread both within the thyroid gland and to the cervical lymph nodes. Hematogenous spread rarely occurs in the lung, bones and brain. We report a case where metastatic nodules from papillary thyroid cancer were seen in the right aryepiglottic fold (supraglottis) and lateral wall of hypopharynx, an extremely rare event.

Primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) of the breast is uncommon and the bilateral involvement is extremely rare. Usually, primary breast lymphoma is of B-cell phenotype, most common subtype being the diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Preoperative differentiation of lymphoma from carcinoma is essential and limited material can pose diagnostic problem unless the index of suspicion is high.

The objective of this study is to analyze the deferrals in static telepathology consultation service. A store and forward approach is used to transmit cases from two remotely located rural centers to Tata Memorial Hospital. A total of 346 tele-surgical pathology cases were accessioned for second opinion and were reported from January 2002 to August 2005.
