Rhabdoid phenotype and loss of SMARCB1 expression in a brain tumor are characteristic features of atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors (ATRT). Rare non-rhabdoid brain tumors showing cribriform growth pattern and SMARCB1 loss have been designated cribriform neuroepithelial tumor (CRINET). Small case series suggest that CRINETs may have a relatively favorable prognosis.

This is the same with the coexistence of spinal intramedullary and intracranial tuberculomas that remains extremely rare with less than 20 cases reported at present. Authors describe this uncommon case by analyzing a 65-year-old female patient who had past history of kidney transplantation due to stage 5 chronic kidney disease and pulmonary tuberculosis on medication.

However, surgical outcome still remains poor, especially with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), despite the advancement of neuroimaging techniques and expansion of surgical indications. The aim of this study was to focus on surgical strategies in terms of extent of resection to improve surgical outcome in the cases of FLE with CD.

Methods: We investigated the expression of 6 CT genes (MAGE-E1, SOX-6, SCP-1, SSX-2, SSX-4, and HOM-TES-85) using reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction in 26 meningiomas and 32 other various brain tumor specimens, obtained from the patients during tumor surgery from 2000 to 2005.

OLETF (Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty) rats are characterized by obesity-related insulin resistance, which is a phenotype of type 2 diabetes. Sulfonylurea drugs or benzoic acid derivatives as inhibitors of the ATP-sensitive potassium (K(ATP)) channel are commercially available to treat diabetes. The present study compared sulfonylurea drugs (glimepiride and gliclazide) with one of benzoic acid derivatives (repaglinide) in regard to their long-term effect on ameliorating insulin sensitivity in OLETF rats.

In this study, the expression of B7-DC, -H1, -H2, and -H3 in response to TPA was markedly induced in K562 cells. TPA also induced activation of ERK, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), JNK, phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI-3K), or nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB.

In order to evaluate the role of the NF2 gene in sporadic meningiomas, we analyzed the entire coding regions of the NF2 gene in a group of 42 sporadic meningiomas: 17 meningothelial, 11 transitional, 11 fibrous, one secretory, one atypical, and one malignant subtype, using denaturing high-performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC) and sequence analysis. Twenty-one mutations were identified in 20 patients with an overall mutation detection rate of 47.

(-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a green tea polyphenol, has been shown to have both antioxidant and pro-oxidant activities, but its effect on oxidative stress of pancreatic beta cells in vivo is unclear. Here we evaluated the effects of nanomolar concentrations of EGCG on beta-cell survival and the response to high glucose loading in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of glucosamine on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced cellular activation in microglia and to evaluate the inhibitory mechanisms involved. Lipopolysaccharide (100 ng/mL) was used for the activation of primary cultured rat microglial or BV2 microglial cells. Changes in intracellular Ca2+ levels and outward K+ currents were measured using fura-2/AM and whole-cell patch-clamp methods, respectively.

The mechanism of LOH has been shown to cause basal cell carcinoma and malignant melanoma as well as other types of skin cancer. A few studies on LOH in sporadic keratoacanthomas have been reported.

To date, the molecular mechanism for regulating expression of this cancer/testis antigen gene has been unknown. To evaluate methylation as a potential mechanism for regulating expression of this gene, we first correlated gene methylation status (measured by sequencing of bisulfide-modified DNA and COBRA) to expression of XAGE-1 mRNA in normal and cancerous cells.

Results from a sample of 279 employee-supervisor pairs from 7 organizations in South Korea revealed a positive relationship between institutionalized socialization tactics and P-O fit perceptions. However, the association between firms' socialization tactics and P-O fit was facilitated or negated by several proactive behaviors that employees used to gain control over their environment.
