Metabolic syndrome in Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) has been shown to be an independent risk factor for macro-vascular and micro-vascular complications. Obesity also affects many people with T1DM across their lifetime with an increasing prevalence in recent decades. Individuals with T1DM who are overweight, have a family history of type 2 diabetes, and/or have clinical features of insulin resistance, are known as "double diabetes".
