Up to half of the senior dogs suffer from canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CCDS), the diagnosis method relies on subjective questionnaires such as canine cognitive dysfunction rating (CCDR) scores. Therefore, the necessity of objective diagnosis is emerging. Here, we developed blood-based biomarkers for CCDS early detection.

Exploring the Tumor-Associated Risk of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy in Veterinary Medicine.

Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has been actively applied in veterinary regenerative medicine to treat various canine and feline diseases. With increasing emphasis on safe cell-based therapies, evaluations of their tumorigenic potential are in great demand. However, a direct confirmation of whether tumors originate from stem cells or host cells is not easily achievable.

Out-of-Pocket Costs for Long-Acting Injectable and Oral Antipsychotics Among Medicare Patients With Schizophrenia.

Objective: The authors sought to describe out-of-pocket (OOP) costs among beneficiaries with schizophrenia differing in Medicare Part D low-income subsidy (LIS) status.

Methods: National 100% Medicare claims were used to identify all adult fee-for-service Medicare Part D beneficiaries with schizophrenia who used antipsychotics in 2019 (N=283,813). Proportions of patients by LIS status, OOP costs per prescription, and annual OOP costs were reported.

Background: No research to date has examined antipsychotic (AP) use, healthcare resource use (HRU), costs, and quality of care among those with schizophrenia in the Medicare program despite it serving as the primary payer for half of individuals with schizophrenia in the US.

Objectives: To provide national estimates and assess regional variation in AP treatment utilization, HRU, costs, and quality measures among Medicare beneficiaries with schizophrenia.

Crossed fused renal ectopia in a Persian cat.

Case Summary: This report describes a rare case of crossed fused renal ectopia (CFRE) in a cat. A mature intact male Persian cat presented with bloody nasal discharge and ascites. Diagnostic studies revealed an ectopic left kidney fused with an orthotopic right kidney and a concurrent feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) infection.

Evaluation of serum cystatin-C and symmetric dimethylarginine concentrations in dogs with heart failure from chronic mitral valvular insufficiency.

Reduction in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is a common complication in advanced stages of heart failure (HF). The convenient and precise assessment for GFR would be useful for early detection of renal impairment in HF dogs. Our hypothesis of this study was the GFR would be reduced in advanced stages of HF from chronic mitral valvular insufficiency (CMVI), as indicated by renal markers including serum cystatin-C (Cys-C) and symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) concentrations.
