The purpose of this study was to investigate the interest in practice ownership among pediatric dentistry residents and influencing factors, particularly educational debt. An invitation to participate in an anonymous survey was sent to 933 pediatric dentistry residents training in the United States in the spring of 2020. The survey response rate was 32.

The Pediatric Oral Health Access Program is a joint project of the California Dental Association and the California Society of Pediatric Dentistry. Vaccination is considered to be one of the most effective tools to decrease morbidity as well as mortality caused by influenza viruses. For the prevention of seasonal influenza, Fluarix and FluLaval have been marketed since 1987 and 1992, respectively. Both vaccines have consistently been shown to meet or exceed the regulatory criteria for immunogenicity against the three strains H1N1, H3N2 and B, have a good safety profile, and are recommended for vaccinating children and adults of all ages.

Genetic diversity of twenty-six common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) accessions of diverse geographical origin was studied using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. Fifteen out of forty four primers screened showed polymorphism across present set of genotypes.

Dielectrophoretic assembly of insulinoma cells and fluorescent nanosensors into three-dimensional pseudo-islet constructs.

Dielectrophoretic forces, generated by radio-frequency voltages applied to micromachined, transparent, indium tin oxide electrodes, have been used to condense suspensions of insulinoma cells (BETA-TC-6 and INS-1) into a 10 x 10 array of three-dimensional cell constructs. Some of these constructs, measuring approximately 150 microm in diameter, 120 microm in height and containing around 1000 cells, were of the same size and cell density as a typical islet of Langerhans. With the dielectrophoretic force maintained, these engineered cell constructs were able to withstand mechanical shock and fluid flow forces.

Imaging the electric field associated with mouse and human skin wounds.

We have developed a noninvasive instrument called the bioelectric field imager (BFI) for mapping the electric field between the epidermis and the stratum corneum near wounds in both mouse and human skin. Rather than touching the skin, the BFI vibrates a small metal probe with a displacement of 180 mum in air above the skin to detect the surface potential of the epidermis through capacitative coupling. Here we describe our first application of the BFI measuring the electric field between the stratum corneum and epidermis at the margin of skin wounds in mice.

Maturation of neuronal synapses is thought to involve mitochondria. Bcl-xL protein inhibits mitochondria-mediated apoptosis but may have other functions in healthy adult neurons in which Bcl-xL is abundant. Here, we report that overexpression of Bcl-xL postsynaptically increases frequency and amplitude of spontaneous miniature synaptic currents in rat hippocampal neurons in culture.

Immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a trivalent influenza split vaccine in previously unvaccinated children aged 6-9 and 10-13 years.

Children previously unvaccinated against influenza are recommended to receive two doses of trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV). This study assessed the age limit for a second dose of TIV in previously unvaccinated children. Two hundred and twenty-four children were immunized with TIV (Influsplit SSW/Fluarix; GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals).

Booster vaccination and 1-year follow-up of 4-8-year-old children with a reduced-antigen-content dTpa-IPV vaccine.

Reduced-antigen-content pertussis vaccines designed initially for booster vaccination of adolescents and adults can also be used to vaccinate pre-school age children. Combination vaccines, which reduce the number of administered injections, combine multiple antigens including inactivated poliovirus (IPV), which is recommended in this age group in some countries. This randomised, controlled study compared a combined diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis-inactivated polio-containing booster vaccine, dTpa-IPV (Boostrix Polio, n=822), to separately administered dTpa (Boostrix) and IPV (IPV Mérieux, n=136) in 4-8-year-old children who had previously received four doses of DTPa.

Persistence of antibodies in children primed with two different hexavalent diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, hepatitis B, inactivated poliovirus and Haemophilus influenzae type B vaccines and evaluation of booster vaccination.

This study assessed the persistence of antibodies following primary vaccination with two commercially available, hexavalent diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, hepatitis B, inactivated poliovirus and Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccines (Infanrix hexa and Hexavac). Determination of single-cell oxygen consumption with impedance feedback for control of sample-probe separation.

The ability to measure chemical gradients surrounding single cells provides novel insights into several areas of cell dynamics--particularly metabolism. Detection of metabolic oxygen consumption can be achieved from a single mammalian cell using a modulated amperometric sensor in a self-referencing mode. To date, however, apart from visual cues, we do not have a reliable and cell-compatible method for determining and stabilizing the position of such probes.

Cell mediated and antibody immune response to inactivated hepatitis A vaccine.

The humoral and cellular immune response to inactivated hepatitis A vaccine was investigated dynamically in a time elapse study over 1 year. Fourty-five healthy volunteers, seronegative for anti-HAV, were vaccinated with 1440 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay units (EU) of formalin-inactivated hepatitis A virus following a 0--6-month schedule. Serum anti-HAV levels and HAV-specific proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells were measured at several time points over a 26- and 28-week period after the first and second injection, respectively.
