Correlates of metabolic abnormalities in bipolar I disorder at initiation of acute phase treatment.

Objective: Treatment of bipolar patients is often complicated by metabolic abnormalities such as obesity, diabetes, and dyslipidemia. We therefore evaluated the prevalence of these abnormalities and their correlates, in bipolar I patients, at the time of commencement of pharmacological treatment for acute mood episodes.

Methods: The study cohort consisted of 184 bipolar I patients hospitalized for treatment of acute mood episodes.

A case of aortopulmonary fistula caused by a huge thoracic aortic aneurysm.

Aortopulmonary fistula is an uncommon but often fatal condition resulting as a late complication of an aortic aneurysm. The most common cause is erosion of a false aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta into the pulmonary artery, resulting in the development of a left-to-right shunt and leading to acute pulmonary edema and right heart failure. We report an our experience with aortopulmonary fistula as a rare complication associated with thoracic aortic aneurysm and high output heart failure.

Hypothermia-induced changes of afferent sensory transmission to the VPM thalamus of rats and hamsters.

Effects of hypothermia on the afferent somatosensory transmission to the ventroposteromedial (VPM) thalamus were determined in anesthetized rats and hamsters. Hamsters showed a gradual suppression of afferent sensory transmission during cooling (to 18 degrees C) and disinhibition during subsequent warming of body temperature (Tb). However, rats exhibited steep inhibition from Tb 26 degrees C to complete absence of sensory transmission at Tb 20 degrees C and abrupt disinhibition during subsequent warming.
