Despite the therapeutic effect of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in ischemic diseases, pathophysiological conditions, including hypoxia, limited nutrient availability, and oxidative stress restrict their potential. To address this issue, we investigated the effect of melatonin on the bioactivities of MSCs. Treatment of MSCs with melatonin increased the expression of peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor gamma coactivator-1 alpha (PGC-1α).

We attempted to determine the efficacy of the lactate area score (calculated from repeated lactate measurements during initial resuscitation) as a prognostic marker of septic shock in the emergency department (ED).
Methods: We performed a retrospective study of adult patients with septic shock in the ED of a single tertiary medical center.
Current guidelines suggest the maintenance of systolic blood pressure (SBP) at >90 mmHg and mean arterial pressure (MAP) at >65 mmHg in postcardiac arrest patients. There remains a lack of clarity regarding optimal values and timing of blood pressure parameters associated with the improvement of neurologic outcome. We investigated the association of time-weighted average (TWA) blood pressure parameters with favorable neurological outcome (FO) in postcardiac arrest patients.

The virtualization technology has a great potential to improve the manageability and scalability of industrial control systems, as it can host and consolidate computing resources very efficiently. There accordingly have been efforts to utilize the virtualization technology for industrial control systems, but the research for virtualization of traditional industrial real-time networks, such as Controller Area Network (CAN), has been done in a very limited scope. Those traditional fieldbuses have distinguished characteristics from well-studied Ethernet-based networks; thus, it is necessary to study how to support their inherent functions transparently and how to guarantee Quality-of-Service (QoS) in virtualized environments.

However, current hCOs lack microvasculature, resulting in limited oxygen and nutrient delivery to the inner-most parts of hCOs. We engineered hESCs to ectopically express human ETS variant 2 (ETV2).

Background/aim: Administration of cisplatin in cancer patients is limited by the kidney-related adverse effects; however, a protective strategy is absent. We hypothesized that fucoidan protects the proximal tubule epithelial (TH-1) cells against the effects of cisplatin.
Materials And Methods: To assess the effect of fucoidan, its effect on reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress response, DNA damage response (DDR), apoptosis, and cell-cycle arrest in TH-1 cells was investigated.
Natural products (NPs) are useful sources of bioactive compounds and play important roles in the development and discovery of new drugs for diverse human diseases. Most natural products originate from terrestrial species, but diverse marine organisms are another source of new agents for cancer therapy. Natural products derived from marine organisms show diverse pharmacological activities via bioactive secondary metabolites.

CSB55 not only depicts the potent industrial characteristics but also relates as bio-industrial catalyst supporting the spontaneous formation of the products, high hydrolytic efficiency, and feasibility of the enzymatic reaction. A homogeneous β-glucanase (GluB55) was purified via various purification processes resulting in 11.

There is evidence indicating that GABAergic interneurons, including parvalbumin-expressing basket cells (PVBCs), contribute to cortical gamma oscillations through synaptic interactions with excitatory cells. However, the molecular, cellular, and circuit underpinnings underlying generation and maintenance of cortical gamma oscillations are largely elusive.

We aimed to evaluate the role of Delta-neutrophil index (DNI) in cardiac prognosis prediction in children with Kawasaki disease (KD). Medical records of 193 patients were retrospectively reviewed.

However, disease-induced oxidative stress disrupts mitochondrial homeostasis in transplanted hMSCs, resulting in hMSC apoptosis and reducing their efficacy post-transplantation. To address this issue, we evaluated the effects of melatonin on cellular defense mechanisms and mitophagy in hMSCs subjected to oxidative stress.

For the purpose, an aqueous dispersion of hard/soft segmented WPU with a mean particle size of ∼169 nm was manufactured by using poly(propylene glycol), isophorone diisocyanate, 2,2-dimethylolpropionic acid and 1,4-butanediol. WPU nanocomposite films with 1-50 wt% c-CNF loadings were then manufactured via an efficient casting method.

Since the tumor microenvironment is generally characterized by hypoxia, its understanding is important for cancer therapy. We hypothesized that hypoxia promotes the mitochondrial function, mobility, and proliferation of CRC by up-regulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α).

They are the most commonly damaged organelles within dopaminergic neurons in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite the importance of protecting neuronal mitochondria in PD patients, the detailed mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunction during pathogenesis and pathophysiological progression of PD have not yet been elucidated.

Two different resonant frequencies of DSRR can be controlled by polarization angle of incident THz beam. For comparison of THz optical characteristics, two NSRs were made as showing the same resonant frequencies as DSRR's multimode.

Because the NAATs can recognize and discriminate even a few copies of nucleic acid (NA) and species-specific NA sequences, NAATs have become the gold standard in a wide range of applications. However, limitations of NAAT approaches have recently become more apparent by reason of their lengthy run time, large reaction volume, and complex protocol.

However, CKD-associated pathophysiological conditions, such as endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and oxidative stress, decrease MSC function. In this work, we study the protective effect of pioglitazone on MSCs isolated from CKD patients (CKD-MSCs) against CKD-induced ER stress.

Intriguingly, the disappearance of undifferentiated cells was not due to cell death but was instead mediated by neural conversion of hPSCs. Based on these findings, we propose pre-conditioning of donor NPC cultures under terminal differentiation culture conditions as a simple but efficient method of eliminating undifferentiated cells to treat neurologic disorders.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are cells that can be isolated from various human tissues, with multipotent and immunomodulatory characteristics to help damaged tissue repair and avoidance of immune responses. Much research has proved the feasibility, safety, and efficiency of MSC-based therapy for cardiovascular disease.
