Light and transmission electron microscopic comparisons of sperms between petrochemical factory workers and public servants in a nonindustrialized area.

In this study, we compared the semen characteristics on light microscopy and ultrastructural sperm morphology on transmission electron microscopy between workers in an industrialized area with petrochemical complexes and public servants in a nonindustrialized area. Occupational exposure to petrochemical compounds seems to decrease sperm motility and deteriorate the sperm ultrastructural arrangement, which may lead to this decrease in sperm motility.

Determination of appropriate sampling time for job stress assessment: the salivary chromogranin A and cortisol in adult females.

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the appropriate sampling time of the salivary stress markers, chromogranin A (CgA) and cortisol as objective indices of job stress assessment in adult females.

Methods: The subjects were 20 approximately 39-year-old women (13 office workers, 11 sales-service workers, and 11 college students) who were eligible for the study and free of acute and chronic medical conditions. Salivary CgA and cortisol levels were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

The association between adiponectin and diabetes in the Korean population.

As indicators of obesity, waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI), and adiponectin are well-known risk factors for diabetes mellitus. The objectives of this study were to measure the independent association between these obesity indicators and diabetes and to examine the combined effect of these indicators on diabetes in a Korean population. The WC, BMI, and serum adiponectin were measured in 4459 healthy Koreans and were classified into tertile groups for men and women.

Effect of smoking on the paradox of high waist-to-hip ratio and low body mass index.

Objective: Research on diabetes mellitus (DM) indicates that people with a low body mass index (BMI) but a high waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are in a particularly high-risk group. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of and the effect of smoking on this paradoxical relationship.
