Hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) is a mesenchymal-derived cytokine. It exerts in vitro a motogenic effect on various target cells, which is displayed either by cell scattering, locomotion, and migration during the wound repair process of cultured cells, or invasiveness through the extracellular matrix. Although it is known that HGF influences the motogenic effect of endothelial cells, the precise effects of HGF during angiogenesis are still poorly understood.
