Background: Patients with spinal cord injuries (SCIs) are at a greater risk for the development of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) than able-bodied individuals due to the high risk of endothelial dysfunction.

Summary: For instance, patients with SCIs lose autonomic control of the heart and vasculature, which results in severe fluctuations in blood pressure. These oscillations between hypotension and hypertension have been shown to damage blood vessel endothelial cells and may contribute to the development of atherosclerosis.

Global ground-level measurements of elements in ambient particulate matter (PM) can provide valuable information to understand the distribution of dust and trace elements, assess health impacts, and investigate emission sources. We use X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy to characterize the elemental composition of PM samples collected from 27 globally distributed sites in the Surface PARTiculate mAtter Network (SPARTAN) over 2019-2023. Consistent protocols are applied to collect all samples and analyze them at one central laboratory, which facilitates comparison across different sites.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a result of the infection by "severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and has caused various social and economic effects over the globe. As the SARS-CoV-2 is effectively inactivated by the exposure to the UV-B radiation (shorter than 315 nm), the exposure time for inactivation of the SARS-CoV-2 was estimated using the broadband UV observation instrument over 11 observation sites in South Korea. For the limitation of the UV biometer, which has limited spectral information, the coefficient for conversion from the erythemal UV (EUV) to the radiation for virus inactivation was adopted before estimating the inactivation time.

By using multiple satellite measurements, the changes of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) and nitrogen dioxide (NO) over South Korea were investigated from January to March 2020 to evaluate the COVID-19 effect on the regional air quality. The NO decrease in South Korea was found but not significant, which indicates the effects of spontaneous social distancing under the maintenance of ordinary life. The AODs in 2020 were normally high in January, but they became lower starting from February.

Extreme haze episodes have frequently occurred in Seoul since mid-2010s by the combined contributions of transboundary transported aerosols as well as locally emitted pollutants. In this study, we developed a novel method to estimate the contribution of long-range transport (LRT, aerosols are transported from any regions except local area near Seoul) and local pollution (LP, aerosols are originated from local area near Seoul) cases to the PM concentration in Seoul, Korea, using the PM concentration ratio between surface (PM) and mountaintop (PM) sites and the lidar-derived mixing layer height. The overall contributions of LRT and LP events to nighttime high-PM episodes (PM > 50 μg m) during the period of May 2008-April 2019 were estimated to be approximately 32% and 47%, respectively.
