Objective: This study aimed to elucidate the association between the short physical performance battery (SPPB) and QOL (EQ-5D) to determine the utility of the SPPB as a predictor of declining QOL.
Methods: The SPPB and the EQ-5D test were performed with a random sample of participants nested in the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) panel.
This single-blind, prospective, randomized controlled trial was designed to evaluate the effects of a culturally responsive health promotion program for elderly Korean (CHP-K) survivors of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers. The program consisted of 8 weeks of Qi exercise and face-to-face counseling on physical and psychological factors. A total of 63 Korean GI cancer survivors, aged ≥65 years, who had completed their active cancer treatment, were recruited from a cancer center in South Korea.

This study was based on data obtained from the Third Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Of adults with available EuroQoL (EQ) information, a total 23 370 individuals (658 CVD survivors, 389 cancer survivors, and 22 323 controls) remained in the final analysis.

This study was designed to measure the prevalence of osteoporosis and to assess related factors among Korean cancer survivors.
Materials And Methods: This study was designed as a cross-sectional analysis.
Study Design: Retrospective study developing diagnostic criteria.
Objective: To validate 2 computed tomography-based findings, extragraft bone bridging (ExGBB) and intragraft bone bridging (InGBB), as diagnostic criteria for anterior cervical fusion using subsequent surgical confirmation and to demonstrate the different diagnostic accuracy on the basis of the graft material used.
Summary Of Background Data: The accuracy and the methodology for evaluating bone bridging on computed tomographic scans to determine anterior cervical fusion status have not been validated or standardized.
Objective: Potassium intake may be associated with metabolic syndrome and its components, but there has been little evidence so far. We evaluated the association between the metabolic syndrome and potassium intake in the general population.
Methods: Participants were 7542 adults (≥20 years of age) from the fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2009), which is a cross-sectional survey of a nationally representative sample of the Korean population.
Purpose: To compare the physical and mental health status of the general population with that of cancer survivors in South Korea.
Methods: We analyzed 19,035 subjects (age ≥40 years), who participated in the 2001-2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey II-IV. We compared metabolic syndrome components, health behaviors, and mental health outcomes between cancer survivors and non-cancer controls.
Amiodarone is a di-iodated benzofuran derivative that is commonly used to treat patients with various cardiac arrhythmias. It is associated with side effects that involve the liver, thyroid, and other organs. Approximately 1-3% of patients treated with amiodarone suffer from symptomatic liver disease.

We performed a meta-analysis to systematically assess the association between antidepressants and type 2 DM risk.
Methods: We searched MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library (through Dec 31, 2011), including references of qualifying articles.
Cellular behavior is determined not by a single molecule but by many molecules that interact strongly with one another and form a complex network. It is unclear whether cellular behavior can be controlled by regulating certain molecular components in the network. By analyzing a variety of biomolecular regulatory networks, we discovered that only a small fraction of the network components need to be regulated to govern the network dynamics and control cellular behavior.

B13 is a ceramide analogue and apoptosis inducer with potent cytotoxic activity. A series of arylpropyl sulfonamide analogues of B13 were evaluated for their cytotoxicity using MTT assays in prostate cancer PC-3 and leukemia HL-60 cell lines. Some compounds (4, 9, 13, 14, 15, and 20) showed stronger activities than B13 in both tumor cell lines, and compound (15) gave the most potent activity with IC50 values of 29.

Methods: This is a cross-sectional study using data from the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of reproductive-age women. Subjects were classified into three groups based on OC use: non-users, short-term users (0-12 months) and long-term users (>12 months).

We investigated the major trends in health aid financing in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) by identifying the primary donor organizations and examining several data sources to track overall health aid trends. We collected gross disbursements from bilateral donor countries and international organizations toward the DPRK according to specific health sectors by using the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development creditor reporting system database and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs financial tracking service database. We analyzed sources of health aid to the DPRK from the Republic of Korea (ROK) using the official records from the ROK's Ministry of Unification.

This study evaluated whether activation of Sirt1 by the anti-cancer agent, β-lapachone (β-lap), induces autophagy in human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells, thereby reducing intracellular levels of polyQ aggregates and their concomitant cytotoxicity. Treatment of cells with β-lap markedly diminished the cytotoxicity induced by forced expression of Htt exon 1 containing a pathogenic polyQ stretch fused to green fluorescent protein (HttEx1(97Q)-GFP).

Especially, the surface waters, groundwaters, and soils around mines have been contaminated by heavy metals originating from acid mine drainage (AMD) and mine tailings. So far, AMD was considered as a waste stream to be treated to prevent environmental pollutions; however, the stream contains mainly Fe and Al and valuable metals such as Ni, Zn, and Cu.

Methods: This health-interview survey is part of the Fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2009. Of 13,561 women who participated in the survey, 672 were OC users and 3,720 were OC nonusers.
Purpose: Medical schools endeavor to ensure that students are competent with regard to clinical skills. Skills remediation is implemented in cases of poor clinical performance examination (CPX) grades, although little is known about the effectiveness of such techniques. In this study, we examined the effectiveness of a remediation program that was designed to improve the clinical performance of medical students.

Aim: To evaluate the association between acid suppressive drug use and the development of gastric cancer.
Methods: A systematic search of relevant studies that were published through June 2012 was conducted using the MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases. The search included observational studies on the use of histamine 2-receptor antagonists (H₂RAs) or proton pump inhibitors and the associated risk of gastric cancer, which was measured using the adjusted odds ratio (OR) or the relative risk and 95%CI.
Background: Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated inconsistent associations between diabetes mellitus and the risk of lung cancer. To determine whether diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer, we performed a meta-analysis of observational studies.
Methods: PubMed, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were searched for observational studies conducted prior to September 2012.
