Desiccant driven dehumidification for maintaining the proper humidity levels and atmospheric water capture with minimum energy penalty are important aspects in heat pumps, refrigeration, gas and liquid purifications, gas sensing, and clean water production for improved human health and comfort. Water adsorption by using nanoporous materials has emerged as a viable alternative to energy-intensive industrial processes, thus understanding the significance of their porosity, high surface areas, vast pore volumes, chemical and structural features relative to the water adsorption is quite important. In this review article, important features of nanoporous materials are presented, including zeolites, porous carbons, as well as crystalline and amorphous porous organic polymers (POPs) to define the interactions between the water molecules and the polar/non-polar functional groups on the surface of these nanoporous materials.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is a widespread viral pathogen that has caused tremendous economic losses throughout most pig-producing countries. Nowadays, both PRRSV-1 and PRRSV-2 co-circulate in Korean pig populations, and commercial modified live vaccine (MLV) is predominantly used to control PRRS. Specifically, control strategy using only PRRSV-2 MLV that was used since 1995 cannot prevent the spread of PRRSV-1 and damage from its infection, which led to the first introduction of two additional PRRSV-1 vaccines in 2014.

Vaccination is considered a frequently used tool to prevent and control foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). However, the effectiveness of conventional FMD virus (FMDV) vaccines in pigs has been controversial because the massive prophylactic vaccination could not elicit proper immune response nor prevent the broad spread of FMD outbreak, mainly in pig farms, in South Korea during outbreaks of 2014. In addition, there has been little information on the efficacy of inactivated, high potency, multivalent, oil-based FMDV vaccine in pigs, because an evaluation of FMDV vaccines had been mainly carried out using cattle.

We report classical swine fever outbreaks occurring in naive pig herds on Jeju Island, South Korea, after the introduction of the LOM vaccine strain. Two isolates from sick pigs had >99% identity with the vaccine stain. LOM strain does not appear safe; its use in the vaccine should be reconsidered.

The quest for the development of new porous materials addressing both CO capture from various sources and its conversion into useful products is a very active research area and also critical in order to develop a more sustainable and environmentally-friendly society. Here, we present the first charged covalent triazine framework (cCTF) prepared by simply heating nitrile functionalized dicationic viologen derivatives under ionothermal reaction conditions using ZnCl as both solvent and trimerization catalyst. It has been demonstrated that the surface area, pore volume/size of cCTFs can be simply controlled by varying the synthesis temperature and the ZnCl content.

Genotype 1 porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) has been highly prevalent throughout Korea since the virus was first detected in 2005. A covalent triazine framework (CTF) with embedded polymeric sulfur and a high sulfur content of 62 wt % was synthesized under catalyst- and solvent-free reaction conditions from 1,4-dicyanobenzene and elemental sulfur. Our synthetic approach introduces a new way of preparing CTFs under environmentally benign conditions by the direct utilization of elemental sulfur. The homogeneous sulfur distribution is due to the in situ formation of the framework structure, and chemical sulfur impregnation within the micropores of CTF effectively suppresses the dissolution of polysulfides into the electrolyte.

Porous cationic polymers (PCPs) with surface areas up to 755 m(2) g(-1) bearing positively charged viologen units in their backbones and different counteranions have been prepared. We have demonstrated that by simply varying counteranions both gas sorption and catalytic properties of PCPs can be tuned for metal-free capture and conversion of CO2 into value-added products such as cyclic carbonates with excellent yields.

A new strategy to form ordered hierarchical supramolecular gels that incorporate graphene oxide (GO) sheets and cationic rigid macrocyles under mild conditions via self-assembly is demonstrated. These ordered gels are stabilized by a series of non-covalent - donor-acceptor, π-π stacking, cation-π - interactions. These theoretical studies indicate that cationic macrocycles are positioned in between GO layers with a substantial binding energy.

Post-combustion CO(2) capture and air separation are integral parts of the energy industry, although the available technologies remain inefficient, resulting in costly energy penalties. Here we report azo-bridged, nitrogen-rich, aromatic, water stable, nanoporous covalent organic polymers, which can be synthesized by catalyst-free direct coupling of aromatic nitro and amine moieties under basic conditions. Unlike other porous materials, azo-covalent organic polymers exhibit an unprecedented increase in CO(2)/N(2) selectivity with increasing temperature, reaching the highest value (288 at 323 K) reported to date.

There are inconsistent findings on the effects of vitamin K on bone mineral density (BMD) and undercarboxylated osteocalcin (UcOC). The present intervention study evaluated the effect in subjects over 60-yr-old.
