Article Synopsis
  • New endoscopic imaging techniques like autofluorescence imaging (AFI) and narrow-band imaging (NBI) were assessed for their effectiveness in detecting high-grade dysplasia (HGD) and early esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) in patients with Barrett's esophagus (BE).
  • In a study involving 42 patients, results indicated that AFI alone had moderate sensitivity and specificity for detecting HGD/EAC, while combining it with NBI improved sensitivity but reduced overall accuracy.
  • The interobserver agreement for the two imaging techniques was moderate, suggesting some variability among endoscopists in identifying patterns and predicting histology.

Background & Aims: Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) is an important diagnostic, staging, and therapeutic tool for patients with Barrett's esophagus (BE)-associated neoplasia. We analyzed the histopathologic characteristics of specimens collected during EMR compared with biopsy specimens from patients with BE and assessed interobserver variability in pathologists' assessment of EMR and biopsy specimens.

Methods: We evaluated EMR (n = 251) and biopsy (n = 269) specimens collected from patients with BE at 2 tertiary referral centers.
