Autism spectrum disorders are often comorbid with other psychiatric symptoms and disorders. However, identifying psychiatric comorbidity in children with autism spectrum disorders is challenging. We explored how a questionnaire, the Child Behavior Check List, agreed with a Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-Fourth Edition (DSM-IV)-based semi-structured interview, the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children (Kiddie-SADS).

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a combination of self-expanding metal stents (SEMS) and brachytherapy to brachytherapy alone in improving swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) in patients with incurable oesophageal cancer.
  • At the first follow-up, patients who received SEMS followed by brachytherapy reported significantly better dysphagia relief than those who had brachytherapy alone, while pain levels were similar across both groups.
  • The combined treatment was deemed preferable for quick symptom relief and was generally safe, with manageable complications experienced by a few patients in the SEMS group, whereas no complications arose from the brachytherapy alone.

Background: Individuals with ADHD have been associated with more employment difficulties in early adulthood than healthy community controls. To examine whether this association is attributable specifically to disturbance of activity and attention (ADHD) or to psychopathology in general, we wanted to extend existing research by comparing the rate of mid-adulthood working disabilities for individuals diagnosed with ADHD as children with the rate for clinical controls diagnosed with either conduct disorder, emotional disorder or mixed disorder of conduct and emotions.

Methods: Former Norwegian child-psychiatric in-patients (n = 257) were followed up 17-39 years after hospitalization by record linkage to the Norwegian national registry of disability pension (DP) awards.

Background: Proteolytic enzymes and their regulators have important biological roles in colorectal cancer by stimulating invasion and metastasis, which makes these factors attractive as potential prognostic biomarkers.

Methods: The expression of extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) was characterised using immunohistochemistry in primary tumours from a cohort of 277 prospectively recruited colorectal cancer patients, and associations with expression of S100A4, clinicopathological parameters and patient outcome were investigated.

Results: One hundred and ninety-eight samples (72%) displayed positive membrane staining of the tumour cells, whereas 10 cases (4%) were borderline positive.

Purpose: We aimed to identify primary platinum resistance in epithelial ovarian cancer (OC) patients with FIGO stage III-IV disease by an in vitro drug-response assay and to correlate the findings with clinical response. We considered whether neoadjuvant chemotherapy or anatomic sample site and tumor heterogeneity would influence the results.

Methods: We combined the ATP-based tumor-chemosensitivity and the extreme drug resistance assays for testing of 85 biopsies from 58 patients.

We evaluated inflammatory markers in febrile neutropenic lymphoma patients undergoing high-dose chemotherapy with autologous stem cell support. Based on MASCC scores, our patients had a low risk of serious complications and a perspective of a benign initial clinical course of the febrile neutropenia. We also studied the impact of tobramycin given once versus three times daily on these immune markers.

Background: Few longitudinal studies have explored lifetime criminality in adults with a childhood history of severe mental disorders. In the present study, we wanted to explore the association between adult delinquency and several different childhood diagnoses in an in-patient population. Of special interest was the impact of disturbance of activity and attention (ADHD) and mixed disorder of conduct and emotions on later delinquency, as these disorders have been variously associated with delinquent development.

Background: The study was performed to determine detection rate and prognostic relevance of disseminated tumour cells (DTC) in patients receiving curatively intended surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC).

Methods: The study population consisted of 235 patients with CRC prospectively recruited from five hospitals in the Oslo region. Bone marrow (BM) aspirates were collected at the time of surgery and the presence of DTC was determined by two immunological methods; immunomagnetic selection (using an anti-EpCAM antibody) and immunocytochemistry (using a pan-cytokeratin antibody).

Background And Purpose: Radiotherapy (RT) remains the cornerstone of management of spine metastases (SM), even though surgery is a well-established treatment for selected patients. We compared the use of RT and surgery in a population-based cohort of patients with SM, investigated pre-treatment factors that were associated with use of these treatment modalities, and examined survival.

Patients And Methods: 903 patients in the south-eastern Norway who were admitted for RT or surgery for SM for the first time during an 18-month period in 2007-2008 were identified and their medical records were reviewed.

In a retrospective review, in order to describe the palliative care and prognosis of patients with advanced cancer of the esophagus, the clinical characteristics and the treatment modalities applied were explored in relation to survival and symptom relief for 261 patients treated without curative potential. The data were obtained from a study of all patients with cancer of the esophagus treated at the Norwegian Radium Hospital in the 10-year period from 1990 to 1999. Medical data of the patients were reviewed and missing clinical information was retrieved from local hospitals and general practitioners.

Current staging classifications in colorectal cancer are not able to accurately predict patient outcome, and the need for novel prognostic markers is evident. S100A4 is a Ca(2+)-binding protein which promotes metastasis in several tumour types, and the aim of the present study was to investigate the prognostic impact of S100A4 expression in colorectal cancer. Two hundred and forty two patients with curatively resected adenocarcinoma of the colon or rectum were prospectively included in the study at the time of surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • - Over a decade, 184 patients with esophageal cancer at the Norwegian Radium Hospital were treated with varying levels of care; many suffered from conditions that made surgery risky.
  • - Treatment methods included standard preoperative radiotherapy followed by surgery for operable patients, while those unfit for surgery received radical hyperfractionated radiotherapy and brachytherapy.
  • - Outcomes showed that patients undergoing radical surgery had a 3-year survival rate of 29% compared to 8% for those treated with radiotherapy alone, indicating that while radiotherapy relieved symptoms, surgery was more effective for survival.

Objectives: The aim of this study on stage I epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) was to see if our different treatment policies after 1995, when lymph node staging and paclitaxel were introduced, have affected the survival, try to define risk groups for relapse and who should get adjuvant chemotherapy (AC).

Methods: A retrospective study based on record information from all patients with invasive EOC stage I operated at the Norwegian Radium Hospital (NRH) 1984-2001, in total 252 patients.

Results: Total 5-year survival was 83 and 82%, respectively, in both time periods.

Background: The clinical relevance of bone marrow micrometastases in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is undetermined, and the value of such analyses in advanced stage patients has not been assessed previously.

Methods: Immunomagnetic selection with the MOC31 (anti-EpCam) antibody was performed to isolate and detect tumor cells in bone marrow aspirates obtained from 196 patients with NSCLC, and the patients were subjected to follow-up for the assessment of survival. Repeated bone marrow samples, 2-7 samples per patient, were obtained from 13 long-term survivors.

Objectives: Penicillin G with an aminoglycoside is the standard initial empirical treatment in febrile neutropenia in Norway. It has been argued that giving the aminoglycoside once daily to neutropenic patients with Gram-negative bacteraemia may be hazardous when penicillin G is the beta-lactam antibiotic. We questioned this argument and hypothesized that tobramycin once daily was as efficacious as three times daily.

Background: Due to its palliative effect and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) decrease, many clinicians have considered prednisolone monotherapy to be the standard systemic treatment in patients with androgen-independent prostate cancer (AIPC). This approach should be compared with docetaxel (Taxotere)+prednisolone.

Methods: A total of 109 eligible patients were entered into a randomized phase II study (arm A: Taxotere+prednisolone [30 mg m(-2) weekly during 5 of 6 wk+prednisolone 5 mg x 2 per os daily]; arm B: prednisolone [5 mg x 2 per os daily]).

Background: Maximum cytoreduction at primary surgery has been found to be one of the strongest prognostic factors for survival of ovarian cancer. The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of hospital level (primary vs secondary care centre), number and timing of surgery and chemotherapy on how radical the surgery was at primary treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer Stage IIIC.

Material And Methods: A retrospective study based on record information from all patients with epithelial ovarian cancer Stage IIIC treated at the Norwegian Radium Hospital (NRH) 1985-2000, in total 776, subdivided into four groups: 1) Local primary surgery, no direct re-operation at NRH, no interval debulking; 2) local primary surgery, no direct re-operation, but interval debulking after 3-4 courses of chemotherapy at NRH; 3) local primary surgery, direct re-operation at NRH, no interval debulking; 4) primary surgery at NRH.

The aim of the study was to determine if biomarker expression could help discriminate between short-term and long-term survivors in women with advanced ovarian cancer. Fifty-one patients with stage III ovarian cancer were selected for the study, which included 28 short-term survivors (death from ovarian cancer within 18 months) and 23 long-term survivors (alive for more than 5 years). There was no difference between the two groups with respect to FIGO substage, age, World Health Organization score, and first-line platinum therapy.
