Article Synopsis
  • A significant rise in enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) cases has been observed in northern Italy since July 2024, leading to an outbreak of acute respiratory infections that now represents about 90% of enterovirus infections in the region.
  • Surveillance efforts, both community-based and hospital-based, have identified EV-D68 in patients with varying severity of respiratory symptoms, linking it to two specific strains, B3 and a unique A2 lineage.
  • There has also been a noticeable increase in cases among adults, highlighting the need for improved surveillance and molecular analysis of EV-D68 throughout Europe.

Fish are excellent bioindicators and can reveal the presence of plastic in the environment. Diagnosing the composition and abundance of polymers in the fish diet makes it possible to evaluate their point sources and possible trophic transfers. We aimed to use the gastrointestinal contents of Poecilia reticulata in subtropical urban streams to detect the occurrence, shape, color, size, and chemical composition of polymers.

Volcanic activity typically switches between high-activity states with many eruptions and low-activity states with few or no eruptions. We present a simple two-regime physics-informed statistical model that allows interpreting temporal modulations in eruptive activity. The model enhances comprehension and comparison of different volcanic systems and enables homogeneous integration into multivolcano hazard assessments that account for potential changes in volcanic regimes.

Multiple myeloma represents one of the main universal oncological diseases. Due to its clinical characteristics, it is often diagnosed only too late, when it has already determined systemic effects; this results in greater therapeutic difficulty and worse prognostic results. Through the clinical case discussed in this article, we want to focus on the often aspecific manifestations of this pathology and on the need for a correct clinical and diagnostic framework.

Assessment of volcanic hazards is necessary for risk mitigation. Typically, hazard assessment is based on one or a few, subjectively chosen representative eruptive scenarios, which use a specific combination of eruptive sizes and intensities to represent a particular size class of eruption. While such eruptive scenarios use a range of representative members to capture a range of eruptive sizes and intensities in order to reflect a wider size class, a scenario approach neglects to account for the intrinsic variability of volcanic eruptions, and implicitly assumes that inter-class size variability (i.

Immunosuppressive treatment has changed the prognosis of renal vasculitis over time, but improvement in prognosis is difficult to analyze in different historical periods, and can be better demonstrated by comparison with life expectancy of sex- and age-matched people. Long-term survival of 101 patients diagnosed with systemic vasculitis at our center from 1975 to 2002 was retrospectively evaluated in comparison with that of the Region's age- and sex-matched population. Patient and kidney survival significantly increased over time.

Angiotensin II (AngII) prevents the inhibitory effect of follicular cells on oocyte maturation, but its involvement in LH-induced meiotic resumption remains unknown. The aim of this study was to assess the involvement of AngII in LH-induced meiotic resumption and of prostaglandins (PGs) in the action of AngII. In the experiment I, seven cows were superovulated, intrafollicularly injected with 10 muM saralasin (a competitive AngII antagonist) or saline when the follicles reached a diameter larger than 12 mm, and challenged with a GnRH agonist to induce an LH surge.

Aim: To simultaneously evaluate the presence of defects in gallbladder and gastric emptying, as well as in intestinal transit in gallstone patients (GS) and the effect of chronic ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) administration on these parameters and on serum bile acids and clinical outcome in GS and controls (CTR).

Methods: After a standard liquid test meal, gallbla-dder and gastric emptying (by ultrasound), oroileal transit time (OITT) (by an immunoenzymatic technique) and serum bile acids (by HPLC) were evaluated before and after 3 mo of UDCA (12 mg/kg bw/d) or placebo administration in 10 symptomatic GS and 10 matched healthy CTR.

Results: OITT was longer in GS than in CTR (P < 0.

Cholesterolosis of the gallbladder consists in an accumulation of cholesterol esters and triglycerides in the macrophages at gallbladder wall level and may be either diffuse or polypoid in form. A prevalence of 4-8% has been reported, particularly in the male sex; results concerning a relationship between cholesterolosis and lifestyle are controversial (alcohol intake, smoking habit), as well as the clinical and laboratory parameters, such as serum cholesterol and body mass index. Even more controversial is the relationship with gallstones which has been associated with the presence of cholesterol polyps only in a few surgical series.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders can be defined as 'a variable combination of chronic or recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms not explained by structural or biochemical abnormalities'. Motor disorders are considered to be one of the pathogenetic mechanisms of these symptoms; in fact, it has been hypothesized that the smooth muscle of the whole gastrointestinal tract could be involved. Gallbladder motility has been evaluated in patients with dysmotility-like dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome and biliary disorders without gallstones; results of these observations are often inconclusive, conflicting and not always useful from a clinical point of view.

Diverticular disease of the colon is a common disease worldwide. Although the disease is asymptomatic in about 70-80 % of patients, it represents, at least in Western countries, one of the most important gastrointestinal diseases in terms of direct and indirect health costs. Pathogenesis of the disease is still unknown.

Gene-encoded, ribosomally synthesised antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are an ancient and pervasive component of the innate defence mechanisms used by multicellular organisms to control the natural flora and combat pathogens. Bacteria also produce such AMPs to maintain ecological niches free of rival strains. Several hundred different peptides have been characterised to date, and they show a marked degree of variability in both sequence and structure, having evolved to act against distinct microbial targets in different physiological contexts.
