Local and low-redshift (z < 3) galaxies are known to broadly follow a bimodal distribution: actively star-forming galaxies with relatively stable star-formation rates and passive systems. These two populations are connected by galaxies in relatively slow transition. By contrast, theory predicts that star formation was stochastic at early cosmic times and in low-mass systems.

Minimalist Tetrazine -Acetyl Muramic Acid Probes for Rapid and Efficient Labeling of Commensal and Pathogenic Peptidoglycans in Living Bacterial Culture and During Macrophage Invasion.

-Acetyl muramic acid (NAM) probes containing alkyne or azide groups are commonly used to investigate aspects of cell wall synthesis because of their small size and ability to incorporate into bacterial peptidoglycan (PG). However, copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide cycloaddition (CuAAC) reactions are not compatible with live cells, and strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition (SPAAC) reaction rates are modest and, therefore, not as desirable for tracking the temporal alterations of bacterial cell growth, remodeling, and division. Alternatively, the tetrazine--cyclooctene ligation (Tz-TCO), which is the fastest known bioorthogonal reaction and not cytotoxic, allows for rapid live-cell labeling of PG at biologically relevant time scales and concentrations.

A small and vigorous black hole in the early Universe.

Several theories have been proposed to describe the formation of black hole seeds in the early Universe and to explain the emergence of very massive black holes observed in the first thousand million years after the Big Bang. Models consider different seeding and accretion scenarios, which require the detection and characterization of black holes in the first few hundred million years after the Big Bang to be validated. Here we present an extensive analysis of the JWST-NIRSpec spectrum of GN-z11, an exceptionally luminous galaxy at z = 10.

Bioorthogonal Labeling and Click-Chemistry-Based Visualization of the Tannerella forsythia Cell Wall.

The objective of this chapter is to provide a detailed protocol for the peptidoglycan (cell wall) labeling of the periodontal pathogen Tannerella forsythia and the development of a laboratory-safe Escherichia coli strain utilizing the N-acetylmuramic acid recycling enzymes AmgK, N-acetylmuramate/N-acetylglucosamine kinase, and MurU, N-acetylmuramate alpha-1-phosphate uridylyltransferase, from T. forsythia. The procedure involves bioorthogonal labeling of bacterial cells with an azido-modified analog of the amino sugar, N-acetylmuramic acid, through "click chemistry" with a fluorescent dye.

Carbonaceous dust grains seen in the first billion years of cosmic time.

Large dust reservoirs (up to approximately 10M) have been detected in galaxies out to redshift z ≃ 8, when the age of the Universe was only about 600 Myr. Generating substantial amounts of dust within such a short timescale has proven challenging for theories of dust formation and has prompted the revision of the modelling of potential sites of dust production, such as the atmospheres of asymptotic giant branch stars in low-metallicity environments, supernova ejecta and the accelerated growth of grains in the interstellar medium. However, degeneracies between different evolutionary pathways remain when the total dust mass of galaxies is the only available observable.

Investigating Peptidoglycan Recycling Pathways in with -Acetylmuramic Acid Bioorthogonal Probes.

The human oral microbiome is the second largest microbial community in humans, harboring over 700 bacterial species, which aid in digestion and protect from growth of disease-causing pathogens. One such oral pathogen, along with other species, contributes to the pathogenesis of periodontitis. is unable to produce its own -acetylmuramic acid (NAM) sugar, essential for peptidoglycan biosynthesis and therefore must scavenge NAM from other species with which it cohabitates.

Endometrial adenocarcinoma: genetic analysis suggesting heritable site-specific uterine cancer.

Unlabelled: Genetic factors are clearly integral to the etiology of neoplasia. A cancer family syndrome (Lynch syndrome II) consisting of uterine, colon, and ovarian cancer is recognized, but the heritability of isolated endometrial adenocarcinoma has not otherwise been thoroughly investigated. We have performed pedigree studies in index cases with endometrial adenocarcinoma, using spouses as controls.

Pipelle endometrial sampling in patients with known endometrial carcinoma.

The purpose of this prospective clinical trial was to determine the reliability of the Pipelle endometrial biopsy instrument in recovering adequate tissue for confirmation of the diagnosis of endometrial cancer in patients with known endometrial carcinoma, and to compare endometrial histology of the sampling specimen with that of the subsequent hysterectomy specimen. Forty patients were enrolled in this study. All biopsies were performed in the office without anesthesia.

Phase I evaluation of thio-TEPA in combination with cisplatin for advanced gynecologic malignancies.

Thirty-five patients with advanced gynecologic malignancies were entered into a phase I study evaluating thio-TEPA in combination with cisplatin (50 mg/m2) intravenously every 4 weeks. Thirty-four patients were evaluable for toxicity and response, and one was evaluable for toxicity only. Median age was 53 years (range 28-72), and performance status less than or equal to 2.

Outcome from multiple joint replacement surgery to the lower limbs.

All patients who had three or more major joints (hips or knees) replaced were identified from operation records at one hospital and reviewed to assess outcome. Long-term evaluation of a prolonged-release formulation of N-methionyl bovine somatotropin in lactating dairy cows.

Eighty Holstein cows (first, second, or third lactation) were used to evaluate the efficacy of a prolonged-release formulation for sometribove (n-methionyl bovine somatotropin). Cows were fed ad libitum a complete mixed diet and milked twice daily. Cows were allocated randomly by parity to two treatment groups receiving 500 mg sometribove in a prolonged release formulation or excipient at 14-d intervals starting at 60 +/- 3 d postpartum and continuing for 36 wk.

Invasive cervical carcinoma: comparison of MR imaging and surgical findings.

The accuracy of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in staging invasive carcinoma of the cervix was determined retrospectively in 57 consecutive patients in whom the extent of disease was surgically confirmed. MR images were analyzed for (a) location and size of the primary tumor; (b) tumor extension to the uterine corpus, vagina, parametria, pelvic sidewall, bladder, or rectum; and (c) pelvic lymphadenopathy. Responses of lactating ewes to exogenous growth hormone: short- and long-term effects on productivity and tissue utilization of key metabolites.

Responses to daily injections of bovine growth hormone (GH, 0.15 mg kg-1 liveweight), beginning on day 10 of lactation, were measured in lactating ewes. Milk yields of GH-treated ewes increased soon after commencement of injections and continued to increase for some 25 days before reaching plateau levels.

Sebaceous carcinoma arising from Bowen's disease of the vulva.

Sebaceous neoplasms are a marker for malignancy in the Muir-Torre syndrome. Bowen's disease has also been regarded by some as a cutaneous marker for various internal malignancies. An 89-year-old woman was noted to have a sebaceous carcinoma arising within a focus of vulvar Bowen's disease.

Patterns of astroglial hypertrophy and neuronal degeneration in the hippocampus of ages, memory-deficient rats.

The brains of aged and young Fischer rats were examined using a modified version of Cajal's gold chloride stain for astrocytes. A sizable loss of pyramidal cells and remarkably hypertrophic astrocytes were found in the hippocampus of the aged animals, while the astrocytic changes were not seen in other forebrain regions. Four major characteristics of the pattern of hippocampal astrogliosis were noted: (1) the astrocytes were often found to be grouped in clusters; (2) grouped astrocytes were commonly seen to have similarly oriented processes; (3) small blood vessels were more often stained in regions of pyramidal cell degeneration and astroglial hypertrophy; and (4) reactive astrocytes were in several instances found to be gathered on the "border" between deteriorated regions and healthier appearing areas.
