Gap analysis of pharmacist communication with community-based oral health care providers.

Background: Current communication techniques among different types of health professionals are often inefficient and ineffective, leading to provider frustration and suboptimal patient care that can have community-wide implications. Oral health care providers (OHCPs) in the United States prescribe high numbers of antibiotics and immediate-release opioids and have practice sites that are physically isolated from those of other health professionals, making communication more challenging.

Objective: This study was conducted to identify barriers to effective communication between community pharmacists and OHCPs to inform the processes for improving provider education and the methods for training future pharmacists.

E7766, a Macrocycle-Bridged Stimulator of Interferon Genes (STING) Agonist with Potent Pan-Genotypic Activity.

A strategy for creating potent and pan-genotypic stimulator of interferon genes (STING) agonists is described. Locking a bioactive U-shaped conformation of cyclic dinucleotides by introducing a transannular macrocyclic bridge between the nucleic acid bases leads to a topologically novel macrocycle-bridged STING agonist (MBSA). In addition to substantially enhanced potency, the newly designed MBSAs, exemplified by clinical candidate E7766, exhibit broad pan-genotypic activity in all major human STING variants.

One goal of microbial ecology researchers is to capture the maximum amount of information from all organisms in a sample. The recent COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the RNA virus SARS-CoV-2, has highlighted a gap in traditional DNA-based protocols, including the high-throughput methods the authors previously established as field standards. To enable simultaneous SARS-CoV-2 and microbial community profiling, the authors compared the relative performance of two total nucleic acid extraction protocols with the authors' previously benchmarked protocol.

Neuroblastoma is the most common extracranial solid tumor and accounts for ∼10% of pediatric cancer-related deaths. The exact cell of origin has yet to be elucidated, but it is generally accepted that neuroblastoma derives from the neural crest and should thus be considered an embryonal malignancy. About 50% of primary neuroblastoma tumors arise in the adrenal gland.

Conservation implications of fish-habitat relationships in channelized agricultural headwater streams.

Channelized agricultural headwater streams are common throughout agricultural watersheds in the midwestern United States. Understanding fish-habitat relationships within these streams will provide information that can assist with developing conservation and restoration strategies for these degraded streams. From spring 2006 to fall 2010, we collected fishes and measured riparian habitat, instream habitat, and water chemistry variables from seven sites in Cedar Creek, Indiana, and 14 sites in Upper Big Walnut Creek, Ohio.

miR-10b-5p Rescues Diabetes and Gastrointestinal Dysmotility.

Background & Aims: Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) and pancreatic β cells require receptor tyrosine kinase (KIT) to develop and function properly. Degeneration of ICCs is linked to diabetic gastroparesis. The mechanisms linking diabetes and gastroparesis are unclear, but may involve microRNA (miRNA)-mediated post-transcriptional gene silencing in KIT cells.

Ca signaling driving pacemaker activity in submucosal interstitial cells of Cajal in the murine colon.

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) generate pacemaker activity responsible for phasic contractions in colonic segmentation and peristalsis. ICC along the submucosal border (ICC-SM) contribute to mixing and more complex patterns of colonic motility. We show the complex patterns of Ca signaling in ICC-SM and the relationship between ICC-SM Ca transients and activation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) using optogenetic tools.

Health service use pathways associated with recovery of quality of life at 12-months for individual fracture sites: Analyses of the International Costs and Utilities Related to Osteoporotic fractures Study (ICUROS).

Purpose: We aimed to identify combinations of health service use specific to each major osteoporotic fracture (MOF) site - hip, distal forearm, vertebrae and humerus - associated with recovery of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) 12-months post-MOF.

Methods: Patients were 4126 adults aged ≥50 years with a MOF (1657 hip, 1354 distal forearm, 681 vertebral, 434 humerus) from the International Costs and Utilities Related to Osteoporotic fractures Study (Australia, Austria, Estonia, France, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, Russia, Spain and the UK). HRQoL (pre-fracture and 12-months post-fracture) was measured using the EQ-5D-3L.

Romantic Relationships in Young People with Long-Term Health Conditions: A Scoping Review.

Objective: Forming and maintaining romantic relationships is an important developmental task in adolescence and young adulthood. This scoping review seeks to explore how young people with long-term physical health conditions understand and experience romantic relationships.

Methods: Using Arksey and O'Malley's scoping review framework, a systematic search of five databases was conducted (PsychINFO, Cinahl, MEDLINE, Embase, and Web of Science).

Microbial context predicts SARS-CoV-2 prevalence in patients and the hospital built environment.

Synergistic effects of bacteria on viral stability and transmission are widely documented but remain unclear in the context of SARS-CoV-2. We collected 972 samples from hospitalized ICU patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), their health care providers, and hospital surfaces before, during, and after admission. We screened for SARS-CoV-2 using RT-qPCR, characterized microbial communities using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, and contextualized the massive microbial diversity in this dataset in a meta-analysis of over 20,000 samples.

The intracellular Ca release channel TRPML1 regulates lower urinary tract smooth muscle contractility.

TRPML1 (transient receptor potential mucolipin 1) is a Ca-permeable, nonselective cation channel that is predominantly localized to the membranes of late endosomes and lysosomes (LELs). Intracellular release of Ca through TRPML1 is thought to be pivotal for maintenance of intravesicular acidic pH as well as the maturation, fusion, and trafficking of LELs. Interestingly, genetic ablation of TRPML1 in mice ( ) induces a hyperdistended/hypertrophic bladder phenotype.

Demographic analyses of marine and terrestrial snakes (Elapidae) using whole genome sequences.

The question of whether spatial aspects of evolution differ in marine versus terrestrial realms has endured since Ernst Mayr's 1954 essay on marine speciation. Marine systems are often suggested to support larger and more highly connected populations, but quantitative comparisons with terrestrial systems have been lacking. Here, we compared the population histories of marine and terrestrial elapid snakes using the pairwise sequentially Markovian coalescent (PSMC) model to track historical fluctuations in species' effective population sizes (N ) from individual whole-genome sequences.

A Rare Case of Metastatic Hepatocellular Carcinoma Masquerading as a Forehead Hematoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common primary liver cancer and can arise from any form of chronic liver disease or cirrhosis. With increasing rates of metabolic syndrome and obesity, it is not surprising that NASH is quickly becoming a leading cause of chronic liver disease and HCC in the western hemisphere (Wang and Malhi, 2018). Metastasis is usually found in advanced stages of the disease, owing to its poor prognosis.

New Environment, New Invaders-Repeated Horizontal Transfer of LINEs to Sea Snakes.

Although numerous studies have found horizontal transposon transfer (HTT) to be widespread across metazoans, few have focused on HTT in marine ecosystems. To investigate potential recent HTTs into marine species, we searched for novel repetitive elements in sea snakes, a group of elapids which transitioned to a marine habitat at most 18 Ma. Our analysis uncovered repeated HTTs into sea snakes following their marine transition.

Translocation of Viable Gut Microbiota to Mesenteric Adipose Drives Formation of Creeping Fat in Humans.

A mysterious feature of Crohn's disease (CD) is the extra-intestinal manifestation of "creeping fat" (CrF), defined as expansion of mesenteric adipose tissue around the inflamed and fibrotic intestine. In the current study, we explore whether microbial translocation in CD serves as a central cue for CrF development. We discovered a subset of mucosal-associated gut bacteria that consistently translocated and remained viable in CrF in CD ileal surgical resections, and identified Clostridium innocuum as a signature of this consortium with strain variation between mucosal and adipose isolates, suggesting preference for lipid-rich environments.

Broadening Our Bandwidth: A Multiple Case Report of Expanded Use of Telehealth Technology to Perform Wound Consultations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Background: Managing patients during the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and the associated severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) in particular, required the nimble responsiveness for which WOC nurses are known. Problem-solving skills were needed to continue the level of WOC nursing services expected by patients, families, and professional colleagues, while reducing the hours we were physically present at our clinical facility. In order to respond to these demands, our team realized it must create an innovative approach to provide efficient, cost-effective consultations during this global crisis.

Infections elicit immune adaptations to enable pathogen resistance and/or tolerance and are associated with compositional shifts of the intestinal microbiome. However, a comprehensive understanding of how infections with pathogens that exhibit distinct capability to spread and/or persist differentially change the microbiome, the underlying mechanisms, and the relative contribution of individual commensal species to immune cell adaptations is still lacking. Here, we discovered that mouse infection with a fast-spreading and persistent (but not a slow-spreading acute) isolate of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus induced large-scale microbiome shifts characterized by increased Verrucomicrobia and reduced Firmicute/Bacteroidetes ratio.

Laparoscopic Treatment of Slipping Rib Syndrome in Pediatric Patients.

Slipping rib syndrome (SRS) is an often unrecognized cause of lower chest and upper abdominal pain in children and adolescents. Surgical resection of the cartilaginous portions of the slipping rib often provides permanent pain relief, with the standard surgical approach being an open resection. A minimally invasive approach has not been reported previously; we report a novel laparoscopic technique for the treatment of SRS with satisfactory results.
