Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have increased oxidative stress and chronic inflammation, which may escalate the production of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs). High soluble receptor for AGE (sRAGE) and low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) levels are associated with CKD and aging. We evaluated whether eGFR calculated from creatinine and cystatin C share pleiotropic genetic factors with sRAGE.

Methods: Using genome-wide linkage analysis, we identified a novel locus on chromosome 18p (mega-basepair region: 3.4-4.
The Long Life Family Study (LLFS) enrolled 4,953 participants in 539 pedigrees displaying exceptional longevity. To identify genetic mechanisms that affect cardiovascular risks in the LLFS population, we developed a multi-omics integration pipeline and applied it to 11 traits associated with cardiovascular risks. Using our pipeline, we aggregated gene-level statistics from rare-variant analysis, GWAS, and gene expression-trait association by Correlated Meta-Analysis (CMA).

Using an experimental model of isoproterenol (ISO)-induced stress cardiomyopathy, we show that ISO-induced myocardial injury provokes tissue-autonomous up-regulation of the programmed death-1 (PD-1):programmed death ligand (PD-L) axis in cardiac resident innate immune cells and T cells. PD-1 signaling was responsible for modulating the acute inflammatory response, as well as normalization of impaired left ventricular structure and function after ISO injection.

Spiritual possession is a relatively common phenomenon, and occurs in many cultures around the world. It is a frequent claim in Nepal that illness is caused by spiritual possession, and ill people often seek out traditional healers for treatment. Traditional healers are often not medically trained, and this could have an adverse effect on a person's health as serious illnesses may not be managed appropriately.
